[Solved] Replacing GTX1080 - need recommendations

Post by Hultan »

I recently converted to Linux from Windows, and one thing that does annoy me is the quality of the nvidia drivers on Linux. I have a GTX1080 today, and I am getting all kinds of weird effects, especially when using the mouse wheel in various applications (mostly in browsers). I have tested the four latest nvidia drivers (up to 415) + nouveau and they are all bad in my opinion.

So, I am thinking of buying a new graphics card with better Linux support, so what card do you ladies and gentlemen recommend? Is there a card that works perfectly in Linux? Price is not really important, I just want a graphics card that works perfectly.

I guess if anyone have gotten a GTX1080 to work perfectly on Linux and can give me some hints on what settings to change, I guess that would be better than buying a new card.

Info about my machine:

I see that you have an i7-7700K which means that you have built-in cpu graphics Intel® HD Graphics 630.

I'd try going into your computer settings and activating the internal graphics (wording will probably be different).

See if that works out for you.

Interesting, when you say "computer settings" do you mean NVidia X Server Settings? I did not find anything there...

Sorry, should have been more specific. In BIOS computer settings.

For my desktop, I disabled the on-board graphics, then I installed a video card because I was having such a difficult time with Windows 8, then 10 on it being so slow. I figured that maybe having the internal graphics off and using the installed video card would help. It didn't.

So, when I finally got rid of Windows and installed Mint on the desktop, I removed the video card and re-enabled the on-board graphics. It now runs version 19 with no problem.

Ahh, I see, I'll go into my BIOS and see what I can find there. Thanks!

i have a GTX1070 and a intelHD 530 on a laptop. I have lots of problems with video and drivers.
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=276201

in bios you need to enable or switch from discrete to hybrid graphics or optimus gaphics or integrated to use the intel HD graphics.
I found if i used any kernal higher than sub version 22 i get black screen after grub menu using the intel kernel drivers

nvidia drivers are a pain to get working correctly with intel optimus prime switching.
intel drives work ok if you dont need performance of nvidia drivers.

try intel or just stick with nvidia.
you may need to purge nvidia drivers if you get in to trouble, search forum on how to purge and reinstall clean nvidia drivers.
V396 are probable the best to use until the V400 series become stable.

I finally solved my screen tearing problems so now I don't need a new card anymore. This video helped me get rid of 90-95 % of my screen tearing problems:

Thanks for the help though, everyone that has commented!
