[Abandoned] Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
Hi everyone,
Sorry if this has already been discussed but I haven't found a solution to my problem on the forum.
I installed Mint 19 on my GF's PC (HP Omni 120 AIO PC with Intel integrated GPU). It was a clean install. Everything works but there are severe flickering horizontal lines all over the screen. This does NOT happen in the BIOS or in 'nomodeset'. Tried Ubuntu 18 and same thing happened even with livedisc. So I suppose this is a driver problem with the GPU. I can't find a way to remove this, if someone has a clue I'll be pleased to know!
Thank you very much!

Here it is, hope I didn't do it wrong!
Re: Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
Nope, that's perfect. That command gives forum members a complete, general view of the specs, etc. of your computer.
Re: Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
As it has been many days since I posted this I allow myself to bump this thread, if someone has a clue I'd be really glad, my GF's PC is still unusable... Thanks everyone!
Re: Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
Try testing the kernel parameter
At the GRUB boot menu select the correct line but don’t press Enter. Press the “E” key to edit. If no menu shows, then hold down the shift key while starting. Use the Down arrow key to go down to the line that starts with:
linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff
Go to the end of the line. Add a space and then add:
Press F10 to start your system. The effect will only last for one session.
If that doesn’t help, then I suggest trying Mint MATE or Xfce. The Intel HD Graphics 2000 on your system may not be powerful enough for Cinnamon.
i915.enable_psr=0

Re: Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
Thanks for the idea! Unfortunately it didn't work
I can try with another version, but aren't they all based on Ubuntu 18? Because I tried to install Ubuntu 18 and I have the same flickering line problem

Re: Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
Although this is not a major cause of flickering, anything that reduces the graphics processing demands can help minimize it. The MATE and Xfce desktops don’t require 3D graphics hardware acceleration as Cinnamon does. Also, those editions have other options for the Window Manager, which Cinnamon does not have.
Before doing that, you can test using the Intel driver instead of modesetting. It’s still the default driver for older Intel graphics chipsets.
Use this command to create an xorg.conf file:
Open the file for editing:
Add these lines:
Log out and back in. If that doesn’t help, then change the number 3 to 2 in the line
If that doesn’t help, then remove the line
If that doesn’t help, then change
If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot:

Thank you for your advices. Unfortunately nothing works, I tried other things found on other forums without success, and tried about 10 different distros with different kernels and same thing happens. I surrender, and installed Windows on this machine

Also, the older 4.4 kernel may work better with your older PC. I’ve posted the instructions in case you decide to try Mint again:
Open Software Sources. Click Additional Repositories and then Add a new repository. Add this line:
Click the OK button to update the cache. Open Update Manager and click Refresh. Click View > Linux kernels. Install the newest 4.4 kernel.

Re: [Abandoned] Flickering lines / Mint 19 & Intel integrated GPU
Yes I know, in fact I tried really old distributions too, with old kernels, and it still didn't work... So I surrendered. I can't try now, I installed good ol' windows from scratch, not that I wanted it, but at least she can use her PC.
Thanks again everyone for your time and patience, next time i'll build a real PC for my GF and install LM again
