The following are the specs of my laptop:
MSI (GP62M 7REX Leopard Pro)
Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64 bit
CPU: Intel Core i-7 7700HQ @ 2.80 GHz x 4
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti & Intel Corporation Device 591b (according to system info)
To be able to use the Nvidia card I installed Nvidia Prime which lets me use the card without any problems. However if I attempt to
switch to the Intel card, the screen turns completely black and I'm only able to access the system again in safe mode.
So far (I've been using Linux since June), I managed to use the laptop by just using the Nvidia card though the battery usage is really intensive.
Recentely, I've just completed a Blender animation with Blender 2.79b and I'm now rendering it (it takes a very long time for this process). Obviously, the rendering is done with the Nvidia card (GPU Compute and CUDA in the user preferences in Blender), however, ever since I started rendering this particular scene which is more complex compared to the previous ones, I've noticed that the mouse goes ballistic and if I attempt to use any other programs (which do not need an Nvidia graphic card) everything gets incredibly slowed down...
This problem has only started recently and I don't have enough experience to understand whether it is related to upgrading the kernel or not (I only upgrade what is suggested in the Update Manager).
I'm not an expert so the only thing I did was to check the CPU usage while rendering in Blender and, as expected, the CPU usage is very low because I'm rendering with the GPU.
The other thing I did was to have a look at Prime (NVIDIA X Server Settings) and I realized that in the display configuration the display doesn't get detected.
I'm using a proprietary driver for Nvidia and an open source one for Intel.
This laptop was meant to be used with Windows 10 so in the keyboard there is a shorcut (FN F5) called Eco to switch between graphic cards without problems but in Linux it doesn't work.
My questions:
1. Is there an easy way to fix the problem about switching graphic cards and make them both work?
2. If n.1 is yes, is it possible to use the Intel graphic card and render Blender animation with Nvidia at the same time?
3. Does the GPU usage influence the CPU performance?

Shall I just wait for a new kernel to be released which hopefully will solve the problem?
I read that downgrading the kernel is not recommended.
I use this laptop for my projects so having to reinstall the system and moving files around if anything goes wrong it's a huge waste of time for me.
In the meantime, I will just keep using the Nvidia card with proprietary driver unless someone has a better idea.

The source of your problem may be different than that of user firepower. You’re using Mint 18.3, where GPU switching was handled differently. I don’t have any problem using the kernels available through Update Manager on my ASUS Optimus laptop. I tested the 4.15.0-23, 4.15.0-29, 4.15.0-34, and 4.15.0-42 kernels.
Can you boot with the default 4.15.0-20 kernel or any others without a problem?
I suggest switching to the Intel GPU. When you get the black screen, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter tty1. Use this command to switch to the Nvidia GPU and reboot:
When you get to the desktop, post the Xorg.0.log.old file (not the Xorg.0.log). Use this command to open the file:

So it was just to output the terminal result??? 
I've encountered a few problems in the process:
Once I switched to Intel from Prime and restarted the laptop, the black screen appeared but there was also a white hyphen on the top left which is normally intermittent but in this case was not. The laptop was totally frozen so I couldn't use CTRL + ALT + F1.
I only managed to make it work again in Safe Mode, but in safe mode Prime doesn't work because the graphic cards, as you know, are not loaded and the
system uses the CPU instead. The display was also weird (first time this happens), my display is 1920 x 1080 but in this case it was 960 x 720 and I couldn't switch it to normal because no other options were available and the display could not be detected automatically.
I input the command: sudo prime-select nvidia; reboot (thank you, that's a life saver)
and then outputted the log as you requested.
The only reason why I didn't boot my machine with 4.15.0-20 kernel is because I read a warning message in the Updater saying that booting the system with an older kernel can mess up the system so it is not recommended. However, when in safe mode, there is a selection of a few kernels available to boot the system so I will try it in the future because, this is my main laptop I use for my projects and I need it to be as stable as possible. I'll reboot the laptop with the kernel you suggested once I finish rendering my animation in Blender.

Select the Intel GPU again and reboot. Enter Recovery Mode and select “
root - drop to root shell prompt”. Press ENTER.
Type this command:
prime-select queryThe output should say intel
If it does say intel, then type this command:

If you open the Synaptic Package Manager and type
XFree86 in the search window, then these 3 packages are available:ttf-xfree86-nonfree
ttf-xfree86-nonfree-syriac
t1-xfree86-nonfree
You can then search for
xfonts and these two packages are available:xfonts-75dpi
xfonts-100dpi
You can then search for
xfstt but xfs is not available.The last step listed by lixo1 is to Recompile root, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

I can't install Wine and some system apps seem to behave oddly so I'm starting a new post.
I will definitely get back here once I'm done!

Because of all the troubles I had to go through reinstalling the system (I even had problems booting from USB), I've decided to wait until Nvidia finally understands that they have to release an open source driver for us just like Intel does and/or a new kernel or system where this problem is finally fixed.
I can't install Wine and some system apps seem to behave oddly so I'm starting a new post.
I will definitely get back here once I'm done!
