[SOLVED] Nvidia Driver Does Not Show Correct Resolution

Post by redpinkoZ1917 » Sun Dec 16, 2018 5:08 am

Hello everyone. This issue has been quite difficult for me to solve. I'm using linux mint 19 Tara, cinnamon 64bit

I started out utilizing the onboard intel display port output that natively utilized my monitor's 2560x1080 output. Upon installing my Nvidia NVS 310 GPU, the nouveau drivers recognized my display's output resolution as well. The trouble came when I decided to install the nvidia 390 drivers because the performance is much better (if you can get them to work properly).

Soon after installing the new drivers, I discovered that I was restricted to 1920x1080. Setting a custom resolution in the Nvidia program made it blurry and it hurt my eyes. I've tried so many fixes to no avail. I am using a KVM switch too.

I know my GPU and monitor support the resolution too, which makes this all the more frustrating.

^I went through tutorials like this a few times, only to end up with a bunch of errors like the "bad name" error. Then I found out that the xrandr thing might not even be supported anymore.

Here is my xorg.conf file:

Remove the Nvidia driver in Driver Manager. Because of some buggy operation, you will probably need to use this command also after rebooting: apt autoremove; reboot

Check using the inxi -Gx command that the nouveau driver is loading.

Following the instructions, my computer booted into software rendering mode (no hardware acceleration) upon re-entering. My resolution is now very small (640x480 is the only option), and the display manager thinks my screen is a laptop screen; however, the nouveau driver seems to be loading.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF119 [NVS 310] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.6 )

           Resolution: 640x480@73.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 6.0, 256 bits)
version: 3.3 Mesa 18.0.5 Direct Render: Yes

Code: Select all

$ xrandr --prop
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

The nouveau driver is not loading. Use this command and check if there is a file named nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf. It should have been removed with the Nvidia driver: ls /etc/modprobe.d

If it exists, then use this command to remove it: sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf

Then update the initial ramdisk and reboot: sudo update-initramfs -u; reboot

Well, I guess I still have more to learn when it comes to understanding the logs. The nouveau driver seems to actually be working now, with full resolution (2560x1080), after following your instructions. Next step is getting the Nvidia driver to work. I appreciate your patience and assistance.

Edit: also forgot to mention that nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf was indeed not removed, and the steps I followed removed it, thereby bringing me to this current point.

It seems also that the current recognized input is DP-2, not DP-1, which may indicate why some issues have been happening. I dunno. I submit myself to the judgement of the forum lol

Re-install the Nvidia driver. Then post the output of the xrandr command. You don’t need to use sudo.

Alright, so I reinstalled the 390 driver and I am getting full resolution, but I am not actually sure if the driver is actually running.

The Nvidia driver is not loading. Use this command and check if there is a file named nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf. A new one should have been created with the Nvidia driver installation:
ls /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf

If it doesn’t exist, then use this command to create one:
sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf

Use this command to open the file for editing:
xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf

Add these lines:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

Then update the initial ramdisk and reboot: sudo update-initramfs -u; reboot

Check for the Nvidia driver. If it has not loaded, then reboot a second time to get the configuration correct.

Alright, I followed your directions, and I appear to be back at square one. Driver seems to be functioning, but the highest resolution available is 1920x1080. It might also be worth noting that I had to create the conf file, and the only lines in that file became the ones you told me to add. Nothing else. We are also back to DP-1 as the primary, strange enough.

Code: Select all

$ xrandr

These lines are the monitor’s EDID in hex format from the xrandr --prop output.

Use this command to convert that data into binary format and save it to a file named .edid.bin in Home:
xxd -r -p .edid.txt .edid.bin

Use this command to create an xorg.conf file: sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Use this command to open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines but substitute your-user-name with your actual user name:

I now cannot boot with a gui. I just get command line entry. The following happens after I type sudo startxI’m gonna be typing this out myself, so bear with me.
I guess I should’ve asked, but should code you gave me for the conf file have been the only code in there? I’m pretty sure that the configs still in there were left over from the last venture I had with the xorg.conf. If so, sorry my bad.

Code: Select all

(==) Log file: “/var/log/xorg.conf”
(==) Using config file: “/etc/X11/xorg.conf”
(==) Using system config directory “/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d”
Parse error on line 58 of section Screen in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
“Section” is not a valid keyword in this section.
(EE)
Fatal server error:
(EE) no screens found (EE)

Probably the easiest thing to do is delete the xorg.conf file you created and start again to get back to a GUI. As an alternative to using xxd (thanks roblm - didn't know that one), you can also pull the edid direct from the monitor - of course it will need to be connected when you do it (you will need to install read-edid from software sources)

Code: Select all

sudo get-edid -b x > yourbinfile.bin
where x is the bus number which you can find by running (in my case below the laptop screen is bus 3 and 4 is my external monitor)

Code: Select all

andy@T430 ~ $ sudo get-edid | parse-edid
[sudo] password for andy:
This is read-edid version 3.0.2. Prepare for some fun.
Attempting to use i2c interface
No EDID on bus 1
No EDID on bus 2
No EDID on bus 5
No EDID on bus 6
No EDID on bus 7
No EDID on bus 8
No EDID on bus 9
3 potential busses found: 0 3 4 <---------------------------------------here
Will scan through until the first EDID is found.
Pass a bus number as an option to this program to go only for that one.
Bus 0 doesn't really have an EDID...
128-byte EDID successfully retrieved from i2c bus 3
Looks like i2c was successful. Have a good day.
this just removes one potential source of error in what you are trying to do.

Yes and I forgot to post instructions in case you could not get back to the desktop. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

If you can't enter tty1, then select Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”.

Press ENTER. Then change the file permissions to read and write by using this command:
mount -o remount,rw /

Then use this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

So, removing the xorg.conf file has enabled me to move to the login screen, but every time I input my password, the screen just flickers like it's gonna log in but just returns me to the login screen.

You will have to temporarily remove the Nvidia driver:

Code: Select all

apt purge *nvidia*
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u; reboot

I’m currently doing a time shift via livedisk. Once done, I will be redoing the steps correctly and I will report back on my progress.

I think I know why that happened. You previously used the command sudo startx. What that does is change the ownership of the file .Xauthority in Home from you to root and that can cause the login loop. So don't ever use sudo with startx.

I was going to give you the instructions on how to correct that but I see you're going to use a Timeshift restore point.

Re: Nvidia Driver Does Not Show Correct Resolution

This is the first time I’ve tried using that method in Mint 19. It’s possible it won’t work now because of changes made by the Linux developers to Xorg of by Nvidia on what info it’s drivers will read and execute from configuration files.

Post the output of the Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it: xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If there is a problem posting that long file, then it can be uploaded to pastebin.
First install pastebinit with this command: apt install pastebinit

Then use this command to upload the file to pastebin: pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Unfortunately, I won't be back online until tomorrow afternoon.
