but you didn't maximize the window to show the full output.

wither way you need to purge nvidia and don't do anything. then reboot hopefully it will boot with open source drivers
apt purge nvidia* then reboot

The 415 driver metapackage is selected, but the status bar message remains: No proprietary drivers in use.

It did show the full output. But it was a little compressed.
Here it is again, from a full screen.

I added some lines to isolate, likely the same ones you changed the color on.
I also added some white space.

Hoping the forum does not compress it, again...

dpkg -l nvidia*

Code: Select all

$ dpkg -l nvidia*

Driver Manage still shows Nvidia driver 415 metapackage is selected.

The status bar message is still:

Code: Select all

No proprietary drivers are in use.
So, Nvidia is lying to itself and can't tell whether it is coming or going....

It looks as if at least parts of 410 are installed.
I'm wondering if a purge of 410 would remove any conflicts.?

Synaptic shows 2 NVIDIA driver 415 headless metapackages as not installed... One with "No DKMS".

I'm going to reboot without making any more changes.
Then, do another purge, if needed, after the reboot.

Maybe tomorrow.
I'm running out of time again.

trytip, I appreciate your hanging in there, with me.

Catching up, before shutting down
:
I'm using the Driver Manager, as advised, to do the installs.

I did not reboot after purging Nvidia.
The updated installation of 410 brought along 415.
Then, I rebooted.

After a reboot, several versions were available in the Driver Manager.
I selected 415.

Driver Manager still shows 415 is selected
The status bar still shows that

Code: Select all

No Proprietary 415drivers are in use.
GeForce GTX 1050 Ti still shows

Code: Select all

Display Devices: None
I can see no way to change it.

PowerMizer is showing

Code: Select all

Preferred Mode: Auto
Current Mode: Adaptive
Again, I can see no way to change it.

Back tomorrow...

Code: Select all

apt purge nvidia*

Code: Select all

reboot

Code: Select all

dpkg -l nvidia*

the goal is to purge . reboot . remove the ppa . update . reboot . dpkg -l nvidia* . if none installed then use driver manager to install the highest mint will offer . install it . reboot and if dpkg -l nvidia* . if only one driver is shown as ii then you may install the ppa and upgrade . we keep missing a step

next time you see this. open software sources from menu and UNcheck all the nvidia ppa then apt update then purge again and reboot . do not install anything dpkg -l nvidia* should show none on every level. that's the goal first

A quick adjustment, then I'll return in a day or so...

pjotr's instructions made no mention of restarting immediately after the first purge, so I kept moving.

415 is still selected.
Status bar message remains:

Code: Select all

No proprietary drivers in use.
I'm hoping that deselecting the ppa's will suffice, rather than removing them entirely, due to the extra clicks to get them back, if needed.
Ok, I read your 2nd paragraph again and that clarified my question about the ppa's.

So, I'll post result when I return, for what I'm about to do..

the goal is to purge . reboot . remove the ppa . update . reboot . dpkg -l nvidia* .

if none installed, then use driver manager to install the highest mint will offer .
install it .
reboot and in dpkg -l nvidia* .
if only one driver is shown as ii then you may install the ppa and upgrade .

Fingers crossed.

when you use the Terminal things are stored just as in a browser so using the UP arrow key will scroll through the commands you used. this makes it easier to work with Terminals

Thanks. I am well aware of the terminal memory.
It is my own that doesn't always work..
So, I needed that.

After the purge and reboot, Driver Manager showed Nvidia driver 390 available, but

Code: Select all

xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
was selected.
So, I purged, again.
Then, I removed packages that were not needed, with apt autoremove.

Nvidia driver 390 is still available, so I'm guessing that it is the recommended option, but not necessarily installed.

I tried to reboot, heard the audio confirmation, but the reboot failed. No pointer, no response from the keyboard. Finally, I used the power button, to power off.

dpkg -l nvidia* shows none installed.

It was not mentioned to enable the ppa's, but that is needed to get to the highest version available.
After I updated the cache, I noticed that I enabled the ppa's earlier than you called for.

Again, I tried to reboot, heard the audio confirmation, but the reboot failed. No pointer, no response from the keyboard. Finally, I used the power button, to power off.

Well, 390 is selected.
dpkg -l nvidia* shows only 415 installed.

So, from 2 computers, to capture what I've done...

dpkg -l nvidia*

Code: Select all

$ dpkg -l nvidia*

I think 415 is installed and in control.

Trouble is, I don't know what to do with it, now.
Is everything automatic and I have no need to worry about settings?

Is there a test, a way to check it, to tell that it is, in fact, working right.?

nvidia-settings will open the nvidia control from terminal or search for nvidia in menu. (Nvidia X Server Settings) for now just open it and just glance over to see that indeed you can see X Server Information
dkms status will tell you what kernel is using nvidia (post the out put for dkms status)

trytip, I'm glad I just now noticed your avatar. Otherwise, it would have slowed me down, somewhat. On further examination, I know your companion from more than 20 years ago... that was a major leap forward that substantially reduced the impact. It wasn't long before the intrusion became almost non-existent. FWIW.

I've been playing around too long, again. Not sure I'm as productive as I should be.

I posted some of what I found in the settings, on Fri Jan 11, 2019 at 7:34 pm. CST
I need to find documentation on Nvidia settings to know what I can do.

One different thing I noticed was in the X Server Information...
Display Devices:

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti still shows
Display Devices:

Code: Select all

I can't seem to change PowerMizer, which still shows:
Preferred Mode:

Code: Select all

Current Mode:

Code: Select all

Adaptive
Driver Manage shows: 415 metapackage is selected
The status bar message is still:

Code: Select all

Something has changed for the better...

this is GOOD

do you see this when you open nvidia-settings ? i use nvidia-340 but 415 should still be similar.

Image

leave the settings alone for now.
ps: don't pay much attention to the logs you they will tell you your nvidia is tainted, this is an old message and not going away soon

I do. That is where I got some of the entries I posted.

I have a menu entry in Administration.
It also opens in a terminal, but closes when I closed the terminal.

:D most things you open from terminal will close when you close the terminal (the terminal is a good place for troubleshooting). from now on open it from the menu. i believe you are set. do you still get trouble restarting or shutting down?

Hi, trytip.

I've been looking around the past week or so, just trying to get familiar with the Nvidia world.

After the successful installation of the 415 metapackage, the restarting troubles went away and that much is normal.

So, other than knowing if I need to change anything and how to do it, I think you are right - I'm all set.

I have 3 Mint installs on the older laptop.
19.1 is on the hard drive.
On the SSD, 17.3 consumes about 10 GB and 19.1 about 20 GB.

19.1 seems fine on the hard drive, other than a slow start.
19.1 seems sluggish on the 32 GB SSD.
19.1 on the gaming laptop is also sluggish.

It seems 19.1 does not like SSD drives..

Time to mark it 'Solved'...
Thank you so much.
