Mint 19.1 Surround Sound AMD APU Drivers Missing?

Post by zyanni »

Surround Sound Is not working...

After getting this system:

(Here is my Hardware)

Motherboard….MSI B450M Mortar with profiles and bios mentioned above
CPU…………..AMD Ryzen 5 2400g 3.6 Ghz set to 3.85Ghz
Memory………Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2X8) DDr4 3200 clocked to 2933
Storage……….Samsung Evo 250gb M.2 2280
Power………...Corsair CXM 450Watt 80+ certified
Case………….Silverstone GDO4 Usb3 HTPC

up and running I am trying to get the following two choices to show as plugged in and available in Pulse:

Digital Surround 7.1 (HDMI 2) Output unplugged
Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI 2) Output unplugged

Am I missing drivers? After I got the sound to actually work at all, MrEen on this forum suggested I ask for help in the Graphics section of the forum. This is what Pulse shows in the configuration tab:

Code: Select all

Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output unplugged
Digital Surround 7.1 (HDMI 2) Output unplugged
Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI 2) Output unplugged
Off
Here is the current inxi-Fxz file:

The default amdgpu driver your AMD GPU is using does not support HDMI sound. See the section AMDGPU and HDMI Audio in this web page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ta ... HDMI_Audio

Also, this Phoronix article: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... -DC-DRM-No

However, the amdgpu-pro driver does have the sound support. The question is whether your integrated Radeon Vega graphics will have a problem with that driver. In two other topics with similar graphics that I’ve been involved with in this forum, one user was able to install the driver without problems but the other was not. It appears that AMD does not officially support your GPU with amdgpu-pro: https://www.amd.com/en/support

When the Submit button is clicked, there are no listed Linux drivers, only Windows.

I suggest you try installing the amdgpu-pro driver. Use the instructions in my third post in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=272074#p1515630

O.K.
I think I have it solved. I thought the posts about the amdgpu-pro drivers warned against using it in my case so I tried something very simple.
Usually when I build and set up computers I use an Asus monitor with stereo Bang and Olufsen built in speakers. I went downstairs and plugged this new computer into my Home theater set up with the Sony A/V receiver and then checked the sound settings. The 5.1 surround and the 7.1 surround now showed up as plugged in without doing anything more . I chose the 5.1 and tested it with the Pulse test and different YouTube sound samples and even streamed a movie. All works fine now!! :D
Not sure if I still need to do this...apt install libasound2-plugins-extra?
Also not sure why, on some of the output information the amd 2400g shows up as having the Vega 8 mobile graphics instead of the Vega 11 graphics?
Any Ideas on that?
Thanks for your help!!!

I think he's right, it's suprisingly hard to find decent info on amdgpu-pro.

That's why I was hesitant to get into the AMDGPU-Pro installation. :?
Still...Just curious about why it shows up as a mobile Vega 8 graphics when it should be Vega 11 graphics. It is why I went with the Ryzen 5 as opposed to the Ryzen 3.. :?
