[SOLVED] Monitor resolutions

Post by AbuDhabi »

My displays don't have the right resolutions listed - I don't think so, anyway.

I have a monitor hooked up to VGA and a TV hooked up via DisplayPort/HDMI. The VGA is called "Unknown" and only has 800 and 1024 resolutions. The highest resolution for the TV that doesn't cut off at the edges is 1360x768; 1960x1080 does cut off at the edges, and looks all blurry.

How can I fix this?

I have been told to reinstall Mint 18 in place of 19, but I'm hoping for less laborious solutions.

Here's my inxi dump:

Re: Monitor resolutions

Post by roblm »

The TV is overscanning. In the TV's on-screen display (OSD) menu, turn off overscan mode by changing the input mode. Some TVs call it "Just Scan", "Full Pixel", "True Pixel", "Screen Fit", "1:1 Mode", "Native Mode", "Dot by Dot" or possibly something else.

What is the brand and model number of the monitor and TV?

Use this command and post the output: xrandr --prop

TV: Thomson 26E90NH22.
Monitor: Hanns-G HSG1093.

The TV does not have any such mode you speak of. All I can set is contrast, brightness, colour temperature and aspect ratio. There is an "adjust picture" option but it is greyed out, unselectable.

Re: Monitor resolutions

Post by roblm »

First try to get a higher resolution for the monitor. Use these two commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1680x1050R" 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-1 1680x1050R
Then open the Display program and check if there is a 1680x1050 resolution available for the monitor.

That worked! Now my monitor displays 1650x1050.

Any fixes for the TV?

Would you set the TV’s resolution to 1920x1080 and then post the output of xrandr and xvidtune -show. I want see if an interlaced mode is being used. If the menu is not visible, you can right click on the desktop and select Open in Terminal.

To make the monitor’s 1680x1050 resolution persist after a restart, add those two xrandr commands to the /home/your-user-name/.profiles file, at the bottom. Another way is to create a custom xorg.conf file.

Re: Monitor resolutions

Use these commands and see if the picture is less blurry. This has to be obtained before the overscan is corrected:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080R" 138.50 1920 1968 2000 2080 1080 1083 1088 1111 +hsync -vsync

xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 1920x1080R

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 1920x1080R
The xvidtune -show output was for the monitor. You would have to connect only the TV to get it’s output.

Also, do you have another Linux or Windows PC that the TV can be connected to and will give the higher resolution without being blurry?

I have a similar problem, my display is a Vizio 22" which I use both as TV and computer monitor. I am running dual boot Win 10 Pro / linuxmint 19.1. In linux I show only 3 resolutions, 1920x1080 (16x9), 1020x768 (4x3) and 800x600 (4x3). In windows mode I show several other resolutions including 1360x768 (16x9), I would like this resolution but it is not available in linux. Anyway I can add this resolution to my linuxmint boot system?

Current output for only the TV:

Code: Select all

"1920x1080" 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
I tried connecting my laptop, and it detected a bunch of modes, but all of them with slightly blurry, just like the TV is now. It displays the whole screen correctly, but it just seems the resolution is ill-suited to it.

Re: Monitor resolutions

Post by roblm »

The info from these web pages shows the TV’s preferred resolution is only 1366x768 for the 26 inch screen, so any other resolution will be more blurry:
https://www.lcd-compare.com/televiseur- ... 90NH22.htm

https://translate.google.com/translate? ... rev=search

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/13974 ... e=6#manual

You don’t have a Windows PC to connect the TV to?

Re: Monitor resolutions

I do, but it doesn't detect the TV, just the monitor.

Thanks for the help and the info. I'll just swap the monitor and the TV, so the monitor is my primary display. This way I can get around the issues. Don't need super-high resolution on the screen I run IRC on.

Would you start your own topic. The forum moderators won’t be happy if you use this topic to solve your display problem. You need to post some additional info.

Open the Terminal, use the commands inxi -SMCGx and xrandr --prop and post the outputs.
