intel iris pro 5200 GPU simply not there...

Post by nkhthe2nd »

My macbook pro has both nvidia and intel GPUs. The intel doesn't show up. I have tried installing intel-microcode. It says it is already installed. No matter what command I use, Intel graphics doesn't happen. Every other thread I have read involves getting the nvidia drivers to work, not the Intels. Also, every thread seems to be able to at least see that the device exists. Very frustrating. The nvidia card works fine, but it eats to much battery, and I'm not much of a gamer. I would rather simply use the Intel GPU.

This might be a duplicate post, as I cannot find my first attempt.

The BIOS date of that machine is 2018 but the Intel iris pro 5200 came out 5 years ago, have you updated the BIOS of that machine?

I have completely erased mas os. I can figure out how to update the bios, but if my bios is more recent than my equipment, why would I need to update it to access a GPU?

There is nothing you can do. Those years Macbooks are known to default to the dedicated graphics when running any OS other than macOS. It's something to do with the Apple BIOS and EFI firmware that Apple uses. I've run Windows on 2013 and 2014 Macbooks like yours and it always uses the dedicated GPU.

This at least makes it less frustrating. I am taking some Linux courses, but I can use bash on Mac os. I got tired of switching to a different os for different reasons, and thought I would pick just one and stick with it. O well, back to Mac os...
I will mark this as solved as soon as I figure out how.
