Nvidia GTX 970 and Mint Cinnamon 19.1, wishing to upgrade to 410 Nvidia drivers (Resolved, card to blame)

Post by Midnighter »

Apologies in advance if I've missed something, but have been searching the boards for an answer, and nothing seems to actually apply to my question, so here i am. Please bear with me.

Ben using Mint for years, very happy with it. Done the rounds with a few distros over the years, got my hands dirty, but always come back to mint. Few niggles, but I find a way to work around them. Previously have a 560Ti until it recently decided to artifact to hell, so got a GTX 970 as a replacement. So far so good. Works fine with Nvidia 390 driver, dual-screens are all good, and performance is good. Not great, but good. Researching, I see that it should support the 410 driver, so google a bit, find the Nvidia ppa, add, remove old driver, install the 410, and upon reboot, only one screen working, and Nvidia driver seems to not be working. Fresh install again (I keep my main files backed up to external drive with Luckybackup), 390 installed again, and would really like the newer driver if possible. I've tried multiple things trying to install it before (hence the reinstall) which i foolishly didn't document. Currently experiencing mad pain from a pinched nerve in my lower back, so is affecting my concentration and patience. I'd rather get this right. I can usually work most things out myself, but this is eluding me, so any help would be appreciated. I'm sure i tried updating the kernel to help in one of my earlier attempts, but at this stage will wait until that is advised, as my patience is wearing thin with myself, and my back is killing me, not to mention keeping me awake. :)

tl:dr, 64 bit linux mint Cinnamon 19.1 install, up to date, with Nvidia 390 driver installed, wanting the 410 driver if possible, and previous attempts to install result in them not working

You would have to remove nvidia-driver-390. If you use Driver Manager, then before clicking the Restart button, use this command in the Terminal: apt autoremove
Then click the Restart button. This is needed to work around a Driver Manager bug.

Then install nvidia-driver-410. After rebooting, post the output of these commands:

Code: Select all

1.  xrandr --prop
2.  lspci -nnk | egrep -A3 -i "3D|VGA"
3.  ls /etc/modprobe.d
4.  ls /lib/modprobe.d
5.  ls /etc/X11
6. Also post the Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it: xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log
If there is a problem posting that long file, then it can be uploaded to terminal.com pastebin using this command:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

7. The brand and model numbers of the monitors, and how are they connected, including any adapter or switch.

Thank you for your reply.

I seem to have the same result even following your instructions. Puzzling. As per your requests:

If you accept - and I do - that freedom of speech is important, then you are going to have to defend the indefensible. That means you are going to be defending the right of people to read, or to write, or to say, what you don't say or like or want said.

Once again it did not work, and can't figure why. So had to remove and purge the 410, then go back to 390. Frustrating. I nsee so many saying it works for them, and it SHOULD for mine, but fails. I doin't know if i'm missing somehting, or it just hates me

The log file shows the fbdev driver is loading:

Code: Select all

[    31.147] (==) FBDEV(0): Depth 24, (==) framebuffer bpp 32
[    31.147] (==) FBDEV(0): RGB weight 888
[    31.148] (==) FBDEV(0): Default visual is TrueColor
[    31.148] (==) FBDEV(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)

Remove nvidia-driver-390 again but this time use the apt command line package manager to install nvidia-driver-410:
apt install nvidia-driver-410 nvidia-settings

Copy and post the installation log that is displayed in the Terminal window during the installation.

Also post the output of mokutil --sb-state

THank you for your patience. I missed copying the install log as I was somewhat distracted by nerve pain at the time, and forgot. Apologies, but the pain and drugs (painkillers and Diazepam) makes me a bit ... foggy. This too failed, and back in software-rendering mode, which causes Cinnamon to crash repeatedly, adding to the frustration. Thanks for bearing with me.

Code: Select all

 mokutil --sb-state
EFI variables are not supported on this system
I did go into the logs app and copied the contents, in the hope it may provide somehting of use:

It seems to be saying that the device sin't supported, yet the nvidia site says it is, and I've seen multiple others claim to get the same card working fine with the driver. Something weird here. Also, having Cinnamon crash on my no less than 20 times while trying to write this is not helping. But this SHOULD work, it just refuses to. The install seemed to go fine, saw no complaints, then this. I hope there is some simple solution i'm misisng, or I'll be forced back to 390

What log did you get the info from? That doesn't look like it came from the dmesg or jounalctl logs. Anyway, that’s not the log I wanted to see. I think my instructions were clear - it’s the info that is displayed in the Terminal window after using the command: apt install nvidia-driver-410 nvidia-settings

Yes, and as i literally just explained, I forgot to copy that due to pain and a fuzzy head from painkillers, so grabbed that log from the Logs app, so as to provide somehting at all. Had to remove the damn thing, again, and reinstall the 390 as the 20+ cinnamon crashes were driving me batshit insane. Will try again later when not exhausted from pain, tho this is not looking at all promising

Hi I have been a Ubuntu fan / user since about version 8 or 10 but have strayed to the mint (about a month ago i found Ubuntu 16.04 way more stable than 18.04). However I digress, Mint mostly brilliant but I have the same issues regarding the Nvidia drivers. When I moved to mint the screen suffered with "tearing" when scrolling so I bought a GTX970 4GB expecting it to go like greased weasel s**t (compared to the I5's HD630). running glmark2 got half the I5 score, Installed the correct driver from update manager 390.77 and doubled the I5 score, still expected more. Did a launchpad ppa install and got ver 396 , 410, and 415 tried all versions only 390 worked the others were stuck in 1024x768 and nvidia xserver wouldn't run. Back with 390.77 I wonder when we will get a newer version from the standard update manager.

Sorry for the late reply, i've come down sick and feel like death warmed up. Blergh. The issue turns out to be hardware related, seems i was scammed on the card, it's not a true GTX 970, it's an older card flashed to make it APPEAR to be one. I was ripped off, scammed. Currently using a frind's old AMD R9 380, and working much better. No need for Nvididia drivers. SO, thanks for the advice, but it turns out the card was lying to me, which isn why newer drivers would not work with it.
