<SOLVED> Bought Nvisdia GTX 1050, what next?

Post by jlwnewton19 »

I've been using Mint19.1 for a little over a week, and am likely not savvy enough to even be attempting it but I want to learn. I really like some things so far, and rather dislike Windows. I bought a 1050oc a few days ago to replace the GPU built into my CPU and can't figure out how to use it. I have it in the slot on the motherboard, but after that, I'm lost. I have made attempts at several things that I guessed might work, but nothing did, and I did what this guy said to in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkKkuzWlaGo, but I used 375 instead of 331 and again, nothing. I tried it twice and the second time it said I already have it installed. It did give me an error message about some file not existing or being able to create it, but I was hoping I could ignore that and just re-boot.(I was wrong) My driver manager doesn't have anything in it, and neither does the Nvidia settings. Just blank windows when opened. Should I be doing everything with the HDMI plugged into the 1050? Because I get zero output when I plug into the card directly, me screen(TV) says no signal.

Hi jlwnewton19,

Your inxi output shows no nvidia card installed. I would check the card is installed properly making sure that all power plugs needed are plugged in, usually a 6pin, 8 pin (or both) power plugs are needed in addition.

If this doesn't help, I would check the BIOS and see if there is away to switch from the amd gpu to the discreet nvidia.

Once you get nvidia showing up in inxi, we can take a look at purging your installed nvidia drivers, deleting the Edgers ppa (its old) and adding a newer ppa or using the distro default.

Cheers

have you tried to boot with the nvidia? and then install the drivers?

Its a slim form with a single fan and doesn't have a power connector that I can find. I will try to play around in the BIOS.

Boot with the nvidia? Do you mean boot with the HDMI plugged in to it? I'll try it.
I'm about to get ready for work, I will do those things tonight and get back to you, Thank you for the help!

I'm certain there isn't a power connector for the GPU. I went into my bios and found two settings, one that controlled the default video processor, and I changed it to PCI(I assume that's the PCI slot on the motherboard), and a setting that interrupts boot to tell me I've installed/removed hardware which I turned on. No change, and it doesn't recognize that I've un/plugged anything from/into the PCI slot. I removed and re-inserted the GPU and booted to see if it would detect it. Nope. I tried booting with the HDMI plugged into the GPU, and that didn't get me anything either. How likely is it that the GPU is DOA?
inxi still doesn't show GPU.

can't tell you about your bios or settings it needs to boot with your nvidia instead of your onboard amd. but if you can't get to a desktop with your nvidia plugged in to a monitor there's no sense in trying to figure out the drivers yet.

try some combinations in your bios to get nvidia booting first

There aren't combinations to try. I have one option even remotely resembling video processing/output settings. Its options are PCI, (acronym, I can't remember and was default), and I think PGE. None of those get the GPU to respond. Flashing the BIOS is a stupid idea with my skill level. Although the instruction manual online says you have to have a gigabyte bios, whatever that means. The brand for my GPU is gigabyte. I'm thinking I have a hardware malfunction at this point. I read on a page that some manufacturers don't allow you to override the built-in GPU if you've got one, but I imagine both Lenovo and AMD aren't on that list.

Do you have a buddy with a desktop that you could test your card in or a nvidia card you could test in your desktop? If not you might want to think about exchanging the card.

does the end of the nvdia card have a 6 pin socket? if you can take a picture of it or post a link to your card and model and a picture of the psu the power supply unit and how many connectors you have.
from what i see your nvidia is 300w min and that means no power needed to activate.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X9 ... UTF8&psc=1 is the exact model I have. I don't have a buddy or a spare card. I've got a 240w PSU. I had no idea there was a minimum for it. I have a work buddy who's good with computers, I asked him about it as well and he was thinking its either a lack of adequate power or DOA, so that matches with what trytip was saying. Thank you guys for the help. In the many things I read about troubleshooting, none of them mentioned minimum power requirements. Should I call this solved?

https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/ ... 0OC-2GL#sp says Recommended PSU 300W but i still can't see if there are any pins to connect extra power if needed.

Follow the instructions in the Debian NVidia Wiki. https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

From the Amazon Q and A section:
Q: Where is the extra power supply port?
A: there is no power port. power will be coming from the motherboard.

The GPU is for sure DOA, I bough a different GPU with a 6pin power connector and it works perfectly.
