[SOLVED] New to Linux Mint | Unknown Monitor Problem.

Post by JustLikeCurisin »

Hello, I am new to Linux Mint and honestly i have no idea what happened to my screen resolution. I could do with some help on this. I have searched online on how to try and fix this problem but nothing seems to have worked. I went into my displays but it won't let me change my resolution. My resolution is stuck on 640 x 480.

The fbdev video driver is loading and the 640x480 is usually what you see when that happens. Did you try installing the Nvidia driver recently and was it through the Driver Manager?

I am using a manually installed driver so it won't let me install any Nvidia drivers from the driver manager.

So you downloaded the Nvidia driver from Nvidia’s website?

Use these commands in the Terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | egrep -A3 -i "3D|VGA"
ls /etc/modprobe.d
ls /lib/modprobe.d
mokutil --sb-state

I see that you did not download the driver from Nvidia’s website.

Use this command and then reboot: sudo update-initramfs -u

If the resolution has not changed, then use these commands: rm ~/.config/monitors.xml and sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Log out and back in. If the resolution has not changed, then use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log file to terminal.com pastebin: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

I rebooted but my resolution isn't fixed so then i ran the 2 commands you replied with and i got this:

colin@colin-PC:~$ rm ~/.config/monitors.xml
rm: cannot remove '/home/colin/.config/monitors.xml': No such file or directory
colin@colin-PC:~$ sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.con
[sudo] password for colin:

You typed xorg.con instead of xorg.conf

It's OK if both files are missing.

Upload the Xorg.0.log file.

1. Post the output of this command: dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

2. Did the problem happen right after installing updates?

It possibly could have, I'm not sure though.

I can’t find anything. I suggest you use these commands to remove the Nvidia driver:
apt purge *nvidia* and apt autoremove

After rebooting, post the output of inxi -Gx to see if the nouveau driver is loading.

That solves half of the problem, but not what happened when you tried installing the Nvidia driver. I suggest not installing the 418.56 driver next time.

Re: New to Linux Mint | Unknown Monitor Problem.

Post by roblm »

It looks like the source of the problem was that the 418.56 driver does not support the GTX 550 Ti, so it should not have been listed in Driver Manager, even after adding a PPA. Did you use the command sudo apt install nvidia-driver-418 to install it?

The 390 driver series supports your video card.
