help setting up 2 graphic cards

Post by sdled » Fri Jun 14, 2019 11:40 pm

2 graphic cards 2 monitors
1 monitor per card on DVI
nvidia gtx 1050 device0 busid 01:00:0
nvidia gt710 device1 busid 05:00:0
monitor0 acer s230hl
monitor1 acer x223w

objective: have 1 monitor on each card, 1 monitor for browsing and stuff, 2nd monitor for gaming/steam/gpu pass thru VM..ect

i have read all i can find on this subject and have tried all i can figure out

tried edit xorg.conf and screens just flash black or no icons showing on monitor0; sometimes it just flashing bar; another time had monitor0 had icons and monitor1 had blue login screen, mouse could move to monitor1 but not visible or active

tried nvidia-settings and then sudo xed edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, adding devices/pci busid/montiors/layout..ect
tried xinerama enable/disabled
according to what i have read and seen in other xorg.conf it should work

do i need a xserver for each card/monitor

i will be attempting to set monitor1 to primary and test
then sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf to reset after reboot if it doesnt work

i could really use some help if anyone can

thanks

it seems i have a bad graphic card gt 710/bad monitor acer x223w/or bad dvi-i cable
i had to setup a custom resolution of 1679x1049 @ 61hz to get the monitor to work on win7
could get it to work on mint by setting res at 1440x900 @60hz but could move mouse but not window to second monitor and it had a screen of login but no login box

got it working:
2 nvidia graphic cards with 1 monitor on each card
gtx 1050
gt 710
mouse moves between screens
windows do not ; have to start app on 2nd screen such as Firefox -display :0.1 to show on 2nd screen in terminal
can right click and start terminal in second window only after left clicking in 2nd monitor
2nd monitor show Linux login background image; moved images from /home/master/Pictures/ into /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/
had to right click run as root to do this
have setup so both monitors have different backgrounds

the only thing changed is:

i also installed Awesome and xmonad, Arandr
so you should be able to just copy this xorg.conf and change to fit your setup
you should then have 2 screens with 1 showing login background
NOTE:
do a restart not logout
make sure to enable 2nd screen in sudo nvidia-setting Advance select xscreen 1 enable and save to xorg.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf then restart
hopes this works for the rest of ya'll and have a nice day

Please do mark this thread as solved, if working with multi-screen nvidia and xmonad we need all the help we can get...
