The fbdev driver is still loading. Use this command to re-install some packages needed by the nouveau driver:

Code: Select all

apt install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-nouveau libdrm-nouveau2
Log out and back in or reboot. Upload the Xorg.0.log file again.

Also post the output of this command: inxi -SMGx

Use these commands and post the output:

Code: Select all

1. dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
2. ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
3. ls /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d

Open the Update Manager and look for a mesa package update. If it exists, then install it. If not, then use this command and then logout and back in or reboot:
apt install --reinstall libegl1 libegl-mesa0 libgles2 libglapi-mesa

Post the output of this command: ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/

Upload the Xorg.0.log file again.

Sorry for the late response, switched out my windows sata hard drive for an ssd so my pc was in the shop. I'll give that a try...but on the subject of hard drive would it be easier to wipe it and re install at this point. I'd like to fix it if possible but if this is a huge problem I am able to wipe and re install if I must.

It’s probably better to re-install, if it’s not a great inconvenience. During my testing of Nvidia graphics drivers, I very infrequently run into the same problem you’re having; not being able to revert back to the nouveau driver, which is probably from a deeper system misconfiguration. Trying to do a deeper system probe is very difficult and time consuming in this forum setting. If I had your PC with me, it would be a lot easier.

The only other easy steps to check are the outputs of these commands:
ls /etc/modprobe.d and ls /lib/modprobe.d

Sometimes the misconfiguration can be corrected by installing the Nvidia driver again. You could try using this command:
apt install nvidia-driver-410 nvidia-settings

Or if you want the newer driver: apt install nvidia-driver-430 nvidia-settings

Then trying to revert to the nouveau driver may work, or leave the Nvidia driver installed.

Ya that's what I was afraid of, I'll try those last things and if that doesn't work I think I'll just wipe it...I was planning on eventually swapping it over to an ssd anyway.

If ls /etc/modprobe.d returned nothing then the problem is more severe than first anticipated.

This is what mine returns

Code: Select all

[bill@XPS] ~/Downloads $ ls /etc/modprobe.d
alsa-base.conf blacklist.conf blacklist-framebuffer.conf blacklist-oss.conf@ blacklist-watchdog.conf fbdev-blacklist.conf iwlwifi.conf mlx4.conf
blacklist-ath_pci.conf blacklist-firewire.conf blacklist-modem.conf blacklist-rare-network.conf dkms.conf intel-microcode-blacklist.conf libpisock9.conf vmwgfx-fbdev.conf
[bill@XPS] ~/Downloads $ ls -lh /etc/modprobe.d

Are you sure you used the correct path :?:

Also it appears that you have never cleared out older kernels :?

This is what my ls /lib/modprobe.d lists

Code: Select all

[bill@XPS] ~/Downloads $ ls /lib/modprobe.d
aliases.conf blacklist_linux-hwe_4.15.0-55-generic.conf
[bill@XPS] ~/Downloads $
I believe that roblm's recommendation for re-installation will provide the quickest path to a resolution.
