Nvidia Prime Select Intel GLX errors

Post by Pickle » Sat Aug 24, 2019 8:16 pm

Hello im new to Linux Mint, but not linux. ive mostly used opensuse, but i also run omv on debian. I was having issues with opensuse kernels on my asus eeepc so ive given mint a try. I tried each window manager but ended up using xfce with compton.

I was actually surprised that the driver manager picked the right nvidia driver and allowed the ION2 to work. With suse i was always stuck with the Intel Pineview GPU. Never could get bumblebee to work all the time.
But my problem is now im stuck with nvidia and cant get the intel work completely right.
Ive tried through the nvidia applet and through the nvidia-select intel on CLI.

Using the intel setting cinnamon will report crashing, on xfce nothing is reported but im guessing its falling back to software.
I cant see anything obviously wrong in the X11 log or in dmesg.

If anyone is using nvidia-prime it would be nice to know if you get opengl/glx in the intel mode.

Is bumblebee still installed or did you remove it, along with it’s configuration files?: apt purge bumblebee* primus*

Does the command glxgears work with the Intel GPU selected?

Ill check but i never installed bumblebee, but i do have bbswitch installed. But I added that after so I could shutdown the nvidia on intel mode (which works)
The glxgears reports errors too in intel mode. Its as if the GLX library from nvidia is holding on or isnt replaced by the intel mesa library.
I will post console outputs later.

neither bumblebee or primus packages are installed.

I started with the nvidia card enabled, through the nvidia settings selected intel and logged out and back in

First, try removing temporarily any plugins, applets, desklets or extensions you added, which depends on if you’re using Cinnamon or Xfce.

If that doesn’t help, then I suspect the last mesa update is the source of the 3D rendering problem, not being compatible with the Intel driver. If you created a Timehift restore point right after the Mint installation, before installing any updates, then use it. Otherwise you can try adding an updated Intel driver through the padoka PPA.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:paulo-miguel-dias/mesa
apt update

Then open the Update Manager and install xserver-xorg-video-intel. The Intel driver will have the same version number as your present driver, so I’m not sure if it is identical or a patched version that is supposed to work better with the newer mesa version.
apt policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-intel:
Installed: 2:2.99.917+git20171229-1
Candidate: 2:2.99.917+git1903051856.6afed33~b~padoka0

If that doesn’t help, then try removing the Intel driver and hopefully the generic modesetting driver will be used:
apt remove xserver-xorg-video-intel

Log out and back in. To reverse: apt install xserver-xorg-video-intel

No real change removing the applets i added.

Installing the 'newer' intel driver didnt result in any different behavior.

Removing the driver did load the modesetting but thats also not giving any opengl/glx, so acting the same as the intel.

It annoying but i think im ever going to want to run opengl im just going to have to log out into nvidia mode.

Create a Timeshift restore point.
Open Update Manager and install the mesa package from the padoka PPA.

If that doesn’t help, then post the output of this command:
ls /etc/modprobe.d; ls /lib/modprobe.d; ls /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d

I suggest re-installing Mint. Then create a Timeshift restore point before installing updates or doing anything else. Post the output of inxi -Gx. This won’t guarantee correcting the problem because sometimes what you see in the Live USB session isn’t the same after an actual installation is done.

I backed up my paritions with clonezilla in case i need to go back.
I installed mint xfce fresh.

First boot up shows intel working fine (with nouveau too). GLX works fine.

Code: Select all

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx Integrated Graphics
  driver: i915 v: kernel
  Device-2: NVIDIA GT218M [ION 2] driver: nouveau v: kernel
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: intel,nouveau
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
I will take snapshot and try installing the nvidia package.

Install the updates you think are necessary in Update Manager but not the mesa package and then check with inxi -Gx.

All I have installed was the nvidia driver through the device manager
This enabled nvidia but would only use the HDMI port.
I installed nvidia prime at this point and rebooted, this got me nvidia with the laptop screen working
Switch with prime-select intel and its back to the same behavior without GLX

Did you reboot after doing that?

After selecting the Intel GPU and rebooting, what is the output of these commands:

Code: Select all

xed /var/log/gpu-manager.log
ls /etc/modprobe.d
sudo update-alternatives --config x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf

Re: Nvidia Prime Select Intel GLX errors

The gpu-manager.log lists 3 cards but there should only be 2, for the Intel and Nvidia GPUs.
So where is BusID "PCI:0@0:2:1" coming from?
last cards number = 3
Has intel? yes
Has nvidia? yes
Vendor/Device Id: 8086:a001
BusID "PCI:0@0:2:0"
Vendor/Device Id: 8086:a002
BusID "PCI:0@0:2:1"
Vendor/Device Id: 10de:a76
BusID "PCI:4@0:0:0"

Here are the lines from a correctly working Optimus system:
last cards number = 2
Has intel? yes
Has nvidia? yes
Vendor/Device Id: 8086:5917
BusID "PCI:0@0:2:0"
Vendor/Device Id: 10de:1c8d
BusID "PCI:1@0:0:0"

Looking back at the previously posted Xorg.0.log files, those 3 PCI addresses were listed there also:

Code: Select all

[ 12.930] (--) PCI: (0:0:2:0) 8086:a001:1043:8446 rev 2, Mem @ 0xf5e00000/524288, 0xb0000000/268435456, 0xf5d00000/1048576, I/O @ 0x0000cc00/8, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072
[ 12.930] (--) PCI: (0:0:2:1) 8086:a002:1043:8446 rev 2, Mem @ 0xf5e80000/524288
[ 12.930] (--) PCI:*(0:4:0:0) 10de:0a76:1043:8446 rev 162, Mem @ 0xfa000000/16777216, 0xd0000000/268435456, 0xce000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x0000ec00/128, BIOS

With the Intel GPU selected, post the output of these commands:
inxi -Gxx
lspci
ls /lib/modprobe.d
