[SOLVED]Intel D630 graphics problem on Cinnamon 19.2

Post by tigerwillow1 » Mon Aug 26, 2019 9:39 pm

Solution info added:

There is a compatibility problem between newer kernels and the Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 integrated graphics. The result is a long bootup time - generally 6 to 10 minutes - which will be mis-diagnosed as a failed boot unless you're very patient. A workaround has been posted in multiple "slow boot" threads. It consists of changing a line in the kernel boot file to add a parameter "video=SVIDEO-1:d". If you go to the 3rd post of the following thread, it links to 3 other threads detailing the process: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=300467 .

The boot time on my D630 went from 7-1/2 minutes to about 18 seconds (using an ssd).
[END SOLUTION INFO]

I have graphics problems on a new 19.2 install on a Dell D630 laptop using Intel built-in graphics. There are 2 symptoms:
1) Won't boot unless I add "nomodeset" to the boot command
2) Maximum allowed resolution is 1024x768 (the display is 1280x800)

I'm suspecting it's a driver issue and don't know what to do. The info dump is:

~$ inxi -G
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics driver: N/A
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: vesa unloaded: fbdev,modesetting
resolution: 1024x768~61Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 8.0 128 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 19.0.2
d630@Latitude-D630:~$

My D830 (15" version of the D630) with the same graphics is using the i915 driver

I discovered when I boot from DVD, the i915 driver is used, and the display runs at its 1280x800 resolution. After I install and boot from disc, the i915 driver isn't installed. So it would seem that the correct driver is present on the system. Is there a way to force it to be used?

i915 is a kernel driver and should be installed automatically. Look in Driver Manager and see if it is an option there.

Driver Manager isn't helping. It downloads a few things and says "No proprietary drivers in use". When I installed 19.2, it overwrote an older version of Mint. Maybe that's got something to do with it?

I have a D830 in addition to the D630 and installed 19.2 today. Exact same result, when booting from DVD the i915 driver is used. When booting from the disc installation, it is not used. This has to be some sort of bug. I'm hoping somebody can tell me how to force use of the i915 driver because it looks like a pretty time consuming effort to figure it out on my own.

Try installing offline. I remembered something about problems with online installation.

New information:
(1)The i915 driver didn't load because I had added nomodeset to the boot line as advised in the FAQ for boot problems. nomodeset prevents loading of i915.

(2) The system DOES boot with the i915 driver, it just takes a long time. 7-1/2 minutes for the D630 and 6-1/2 minutes for the D830, which has a faster CPU.

Response time for inxi -G is about 30 seconds.

athi, what kernel are you using? I have 4.15.0-54 generic as reported by preferences/system info.

And I don't know what you mean by online vs. offline installation. I'm installing from a DVD containing the downloaded .iso file.

My boot time is also in the 6-7 minutes range, never realized it was the graphic.

Offline means disconnected to the internet. There were reports of failed install which is corrected by installing offline (no updates).

More good info. Our boot times are absurd. When I use the nomodeset command it takes 30 seconds or so. I think I'll start a new thread tomorrow with the dmesg info and see if anybody can spot why it takes so darn long to boot.

Got the fix from smurphos in this post viewtopic.php?f=90&t=300822&p=1686273#p1686273
link to fix viewtopic.php?p=1605180#p1605180

After editing GRUB boot parameter to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" and sudo update-grub fixed the long boot time on the d830.
