[SOLVED] Impossible to make linux mint work with gigabyte radeon RX580

Post by Aivan » Tue Aug 27, 2019 4:24 am

Hi,i've been trying to install linux mint in my computer runing a gigabyte radeon rx580 grafic card for some time, but im unabled to do it.
When i run the installation pendrive i only get a black screen, so i have to get into the grub and add nomodeset parameter so i can see anything, but in the lowest resolution.
befoe i installed it, it keeps hapening the same every time i started it. I've tryed to install AMDGPU-pro privative drivers and ubuntu-x, oibaf... but it still not working.
I can only watch it in low res with the nomodeset property.
I've also tryed it installing ubuntu, elementary with no success.
Have anyone had any solution please?
I've tryed everything, please help me!!!!!!

Try newer kernels. Start with the latest kernel of the 5.0 series (Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels. Reboot after installing it). And if that doesn't help, try the latest kernel of the 5.2 series:

what resolution you want? You can create an .xprofile file and put in your user's home folder and then choose it's setting using the display GUI icon. Use cvt and then the xrandr commands to find what you want to put into the .xprofile.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

I tried with 5.0 and 5.2 and same result.

I have 2650x1080 in the same pc with windows, can I use .xprofile to get that and update grub with nomodeset by default?

This is my inxi -SGx info

Code: Select all

System:
Host: Omaire Kernel: 4.15.0-58-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc
v: 7.4.0 Desktop: MATE 1.22.0 Distro: Linux Mint 19.2 Tina

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2656x1080_60.00" 238.50 2656 2824 3104 3552 1080 1083 1093 1120 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 2656x1080_60.00
That's what would work on my system in an .xprofile
You can see it's already available on my system as I just added it.
My graphics chip expects to use HDMI-#, yours may use DVI-# or even without the "-" in it.
Post an xrandr of your current settings and can see which is best for you.
2656x1080.png
For example, here is my xrandr report, and you can see "your" resolution listed in it now also.

Code: Select all

xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1280x720_60.00 59.86
   1280x720_70.00 69.85
   1600x900_60.00 59.95
   1600x900_75.00 74.89
HDMI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 576mm x 324mm
   1920x1080 60.00*+ 59.94 30.00 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98
   1920x1080i 60.00 59.94
   1680x1050 59.88
   1280x1024 60.02
   1360x768 59.96
   1280x720 60.00 59.94
   1024x768 75.08 60.00
   1440x480 60.00 59.94
   800x600 75.00 60.32
   720x480 60.00 59.94

That's what I get... It's not recognizing the monitor

Code: Select all

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm

Here's your problem.

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
The minimum and maximum range allowed for screen settings needs to be changed, but I'm not sure how that is accomplished. Hopefully someone else will know.

See, look at mine, and that's how it's normally shown after install of system.

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

Hi again.

I tried with "xforcevesa" with nomodeset parameter and now I get more resolution.

Code: Select all

System:
  Host: IV01 Kernel: 5.0.0-25-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 7.4.0
Desktop: MATE 1.22.0 Distro: Linux Mint 19.2 Tina
  base: Ubuntu 18.04 bionic
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Ellesmere [Radeon RX 470/480/570/570X/580/580X]
vendor: Gigabyte driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: vesa resolution: 1920x1080~N/A
  OpenGL: renderer: N/A v: N/A direct render: N/A

Code: Select all

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080
default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1920x1080 0.00*
   1280x1024 0.00
   1024x768 0.00
   800x600 0.00
   640x480 0.00
Not working with kernel 4.15.0-58, only with 4.15.0-54 and 5.0.
Edit: Works on 4.15.0-60

But I still can't make drivers work. When I tried to start it without parameters, I heard that the graphics card fans slow down their speed. Maybe mint it's not giving power supply to the graphics card?

Also, I can only hear audio through headphones, not through the monitor, but I think it's the same problem as the view.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT 2: After searching, i found a parameter in grub "amdgpu.dc=0", I added and it works!

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384

Also, I solved the audio problem by adding my user to the audio group.

Yay!

Good info to know, will help others too! It also seems the kernel 4.17 is the best one to use for this.
