[Solved] Cannot adjust screen brightness Dell Precision M7720

Post by FrankB616 » Fri Aug 30, 2019 12:49 pm

I bought this Dell Precision M7720 last year pre-loaded with Ubuntu 16.04. Now I have wiped the hard drive and installed Linux Mint 19.1. I checked that most things worked before I did the wipe, and I am happy with Mint / xfce on this machine. However, I need help adjusting screen brightness.

On my older Asus laptop, I used xbacklight. That does not work on this Dell with Nvidia driver and 4K screen.

In doing some research on this, I found that the backlighting may be controlled by the Nvidia driver. Anyone have any idea of how I might be able to control this?

Thanks.

Frank.

Thank you! The second GRUB parameter did the job. However, it didn't APPEAR to at first.

The brightness keys on my keyboard are Fn-F11 and Fn-F12. Those still do not work. However, Ctrl-F11 and Ctrl-F12 DO work. So just FYI to anyone else that may read this.

Also, I found that the most recent 430 driver does not work on this machine either. I had to revert to the 390 driver, otherwise I got no minimize/close/maximize buttons on the windows of the applications.

Thanks again!

OK, that worked initially, but it has now quit working. I get the indicator on the top right of the screen that the brightness is being reduced, but there is no actual change in brightness. Any idea what I have broken?

I did do a full update for the most recent packages, and it was after that that I discovered that it was not working.

Thanks.

Frank.

There appears to be no way to copy from the window you indicate. I can select an item, but there is no menu to copy the list, and ctrl-c does nothing either.

I assume that this window just shows the contents of a file somewhere. Can you tell me what the name of that file is? Perhaps I can send that instead?

BTW, this was an initial update after a fresh install. The list is long....

In the meantime, I will try your troubleshooting guide again going back to the original set of GRUB parameters.

Thanks.

Frank.

Good idea. With a bit of luck, that's all you need to do: a Grub update might have wiped any manually set parameters.

Pjotr:

Sorry for the delay. Life is busy. :-(

Resetting grub back to the first parameter (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux") did the trick. Thank you again!

Now to proceed setting up this machine so I can actually use it again. :-)

BTW, your blog that you linked me to is an amazing resource!! I will begin following your 'how-to' while setting up this machine.

REALLY appreciate the help, and the trouble you went to in producing that informative and easy to follow blog.

Frank.
