AMD/ATI R481 Radeon X850 XT AGP - Disturbed screen and artefacts

Post by SprinterDriver » Sat Sep 07, 2019 12:37 pm

Hi.

I bootet LM 19.1 Cinnamon, and when the desktop appeared in Live session, the screen looks pretty disturbed and with lots of artefacts (see attached photo).

This is a clean boot, no boot parameters are changed.

I was able to boot Linux Lite 4.2 live-cd and it appeared to works ok, no artefacts.

inxi -G (this is from Linux Lite session)

Code: Select all

Graphics:	Card:	Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] R481 [Radeon X850 XT AGP]
	Display Server:	x11 (X.Org 1.19.6 )
	drivers:	ati,radeon (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev,vesa)
	Resolution:	1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
	OpenGL: renderer:	ATI R481 [1;34mversion:	2.1 Mesa 18.0.5

I've also tried to boot the computer using Fedora 30, X64 Cinnamon and same issue there.

So I got this bright idea. But when I tried to grab the light bulb, I did not hurt my hands as expected from a warm bulb, because it turned out to be one of those LED bulbs.

That rig is an AMD 4200+ socket 939 with 2GB (DDR?) and Radeon x850 xt AGP running Cinnamon 19.1, not surprised that you are getting artefacts at 1080p. I would say that you would be better served with Peppermint or MXlinux or Mint XFCE 18.x (Mint XFCE 19.x might be too much for this rig). Even with these light weight distributions, you may still have issue playing video at higher resolutions.
Mint Mate 19.1. Main rig is HP 800G2 I5 6500 16GB ram, 120GB boot drive, 2x3TB, 1x4TB data drives. Oldest rig is Mate 18.3 on Dell D620 with 32bits core duo.

Yes - it is an old rig, actually given extended life by replacing som bad capacitors on the main board (successfully indeed) :D

Ok, so then I can safely conclude that Cinnamon is overkill for this. No problem, I just try several distros until I find one that both fit and runs ok.
So I got this bright idea. But when I tried to grab the light bulb, I did not hurt my hands as expected from a warm bulb, because it turned out to be one of those LED bulbs.

Can you let us know what distribution works for you? Would be helpful for others who are resurrecting old systems.

Working at that right now.

I loaded a number of Linux ISO images onto an usb drive using multibootusb, but somehow a lot of issues appear (applies MX linux, and also Soulus) after boot loader and before desktop loading. I've give up using multibootusb - try to use unetbootin instead. LM mate is one that I want to see if I get to work.

I have burned a DVD containing MX linux X64, and there is an issue about the desktop (mouse pointer won't show and manu can't be clicked on).

So maybe I'd have some hard times getting distros that works well on the computer.
I ran Memtest for about 90 minutes, no failure indications (yes I know I should let it run overnight)
So I got this bright idea. But when I tried to grab the light bulb, I did not hurt my hands as expected from a warm bulb, because it turned out to be one of those LED bulbs.

I just found that I did something really stupid. I just found that both VGA and DVI cable was connected both on the monitor AND the Radeon card. Maybe that is why the desktop acts up on me

But I guess Cinnamon may be too heavy for that system anyway.

Bothi Linux seems to run ok. I'm about to try to see if Mate goes ok on that computer.

New test of booting LM Cinnamon - It works, and is also relatively responsive despite old hw :D

For the GPU - it seems to be unable to output any signal over DVI, only VGA - regardless of what OS i'm running on it (even BIOS/Post only appear on VGA). So that is obviously the GPU that have some error.
I'm trying to boot LM Cinnamon into desktop when monitor is on DVI, just to have it tried. And yes - no signal at all.
So I got this bright idea. But when I tried to grab the light bulb, I did not hurt my hands as expected from a warm bulb, because it turned out to be one of those LED bulbs.

Sounds like trying to output 2 x 1080p signal is too much for that rig. Maybe some broken trace or bent pin on the DVI connection, never know with these old hardware. Good to hear that you have it worked out.

If Cinnamon works, then Mate should work also.
