Getting the latest Nvidia drivers (185) installed on Mint.

Post by cdysthe »

Hi,

I am usually not needing to be running bleeding edge, but I do like to have the latest video drivers running. I see that Nvidia had a new Linux display driver build out, version 185.18.29. Since I have a couple of minor problems with 180 which seems to be fixed in 185 I would like to find out if I can install the new driver. I have not been using Mint for too long so I wonder if/when or if at all the new driver will be made available through the "Hardware Driver" application (jockey)? If not is there another way to install the driver that won't break a well behaved Mint 7 installation?

Hi

I think that if you have a well behaved installation stick with what you have. How-ever you could remaster your system and then try out the new driver, instructions are as follows:

Best advice is be patient.

Thanks. I think being patient is what I will do after having read what's involved getting the new driver installed. But what does patient mean here? Will the new driver be available in jockey after a while, or?

no, the new driver will instead be included in the next version of linux mint - Helena. This is the way release cycles work, features are continuously implemented upstream, and most linux distros take a snapshot at a certain point, and maintain that version for their release, releasing only bugfixes and security updates. This is done to keep the overall system stable. The alternative is a rolling-release a la arch/debian sid.

The remaster advice was good.

I guess what I am most concerned about is how to get back to my current driver if I should want to. And also, would this break my ability to install drivers through Hardware Drivers in the future?

Uninstalling is also very simple.

Cd to the directory where the run file is and then,

Code: Select all

sh NVIDIA* --uninstall
* is the rest of the file name.

or if you can't find the run file and don't want to download a new one:

Code: Select all

nvidia-installer --uninstall
This will not affect using "Hardware Drivers" in the future.
