Onboard nVidia GeForce 8100 flickering

Post by GavB »

I have just installed Mint 7.
However when using the Nvidia proprietary drivers (version 180 or version 173) the screen performs an irritating white flicker over either the top 4/5ths or the whole of the screen when some operations are being performed.
For example if a website is loading the whole screen flickers, if you move a window about near the top of the screen 4/5ths flicker.
This flickering is very rapid, I tried filming it but the effect was not obvious.

I lifted the following with inxi:
System: Host gavin-desktop Kernel 2.6.28-11-generic i686 (32 bit) Distro Linux Mint 7 Gloria - Universal Edition
CPU: Triple core AMD Phenom 8450 -Core (SMP) cache 1536 KB flags (sse3 nx lm svm) bmips 12600.2
Clock Speeds: (1) 1050.00 MHz (2) 1050.00 MHz (3) 1050.00 MHz
Graphics: Card nVidia GeForce 8100 / nForce 720a X.Org 1.6.0 Res 1024x768@50.0hz
GLX Renderer GeForce 8100 / nForce 720a/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! GLX Version 3.0.0 NVIDIA 180.44
Audio: Card nVidia MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio driver HDA Intel
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Version 1.0.18rc3
Network: Card nVidia MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Ethernet driver forcedeth at port c880
Disks: HDD Total Size: 500.1GB (1.0% used) 1: /dev/sda Hitachi HDT72105 500.1GB
Partition: ID:/ size: 451G used: 4.7G (2%) ID:swap-1 size: 8.51GB used: 0.00GB (0%)
Info: Processes 148 Uptime 1:01 Memory 316.6/2771.4MB Client Shell inxi 1.0.6

I would probably rate my Linux ability as mostly clueless.
I also got the same effect with KDE and Xfce under Ubuntu 9.04.
I have tried another monitor (both cheap 17" crt).
Grateful for any advice / pointers.

Gavin,
Some things to try . . and easy to change back.
Go into your BIOS, and check how much memory is being allocated to your onboard graphics, bump it up if possible. Save & reboot.
If that doesn't seem to help,
Go back into the BIOS and disable the Cool'n'Quiet technology. Save & reboot.

regards, Richy

EDIT: Silly me . Image . go into your NVidia XServer Settings Manager, click on Display Configuration, and check that the monitor is detected and the refresh rate is set correctly.
To make the settings sticky, open a terminal and type gksudo nvidia-settings , hit enter, then enter your password. You can now change the display settings (sometimes you have to change the resolution to something different than the default 'auto', before you can change the refresh rate). When you are satisfied, click the Save to X button & exit.

Thanks for your response(s). The Cool'n'Quite technology is not an option in my BIOS. I tried upping the allocated memory from the auto setting of 256MB to 512MB and changing the memory between unganged and ganged mode but no luck so far.
Still at work at present so will try your suggestion later.

Has someone come up with a solution yet? I am experiencing the same issues. The screen flickers quite often and video playback performance in full screen mode (e.g. youtube, vlc videos) is really bad :(

I already tried the proprietary drivers from nvida (170, 180, 190 from website and the beta 195)...none of them really fixes the issue...

Thanks

Just a note regarding the GeForce 8100...there is still a flickering issue when you move the mouse cursor up to the very top => screen flickers...the behaviour is the same in Windows XP  (drivers affected 173, 184 and 19x)

Mine is an 8200 running XP and 7. Same issue and the suggestions prior to this post have not worked. Thought it was my old school monitor but was sad to see the same issue with my new LED. Looking forward to a fix

Side note perhaps...DVD playback is choppy on 7 but not XP. I get sound from the HDMI on 7 but not XP (despite the NVIDIA suggested fixes). More fun!

I can confirm that the GPU is the problem. As written before the issue affects Windows XP, too. The 8100 does not support HDMI sound unter Win XP, either.

An alternative GPU (nvidia 250 gts) did not show the flickering or any other bugs in the same testing environment.

Havent found a fix yet ;-(
