Unexpectedly running without video hardware acceleration (Mint 19.3 on MSI Modern 14 A10M - Intel UMA graphics card)

Hi all!
First of all, I want to give thanks for your work.
I've been reading this forum for months but I never wrote nothing. So this is my first time :)

Everything was working fin one my MSI Modern 14A10M running Linux Mint 19.3, but some days ago after doing some tests with Steam and ProtonDB I've noted that graphics performance stopped working as usual... Next time I started my computer a warning message showed advising that "Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration":

Image

It sugests me to launch "Driver Manager" but when I go there, it only shows an empty window saying No propietary drivers are in use (I think this is correct ¿?).

My laptop doesn't has a dedicated GPU card. It has integrated graphics card (UMA). System info is currently showing as:
Graphics: Device-1: Intel vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:9b41
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.5 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 9.0 256 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 19.2.8 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes
But I don't remember how it was before

Could someone guide me on how to proceed in order to re-enable video hardware acceleration?

I've found some similar threads but none of them exactly with my situation, so I'm not sure about what can I do at this point.

Below you can see a complete output about my system info.

Thanks in advance and best regards!

That's not a standard ubuntu kernel. Where did you install it from?

I'm not 100% sure but... I guess I downloaded it some months ago from Linux Mint downloads page. 19.3 was last version available when it was downloaded.

Another detail I noted recently which can or not be related to the main trouble... is that the integrated webcam is not detected anymore (it worked fine some weeks ago).

Thanks in advance,

Your system has been extensively modified.

Firstly purge the oibaf PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/u ... cs-drivers

=== Revert to original drivers ===
To revert to standard Ubuntu drivers type the following in a prompt shell:
$ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
Then run a full update

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
And reboot.

Then install the newest default linux kernel for your version of mint:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-18.04-edge
And reboot. Make sure you are booting the newest kernel. If that does not work, come back and post again

Thanks mr_raider,

After following your steps, now I'm with 5.4.0-40-generic x86_64 kernel but the Check your video drivers pop-up is still being showed.

Note that the oibaf graphics-drivers coudl not be removed:

Code: Select all

pol@pol-Modern-14-A10M:~$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

Which are next steps you consider should be performed in order to fix the video hardware acceleration?

Thanks in advance and best regards!

DId you ever use the oibaf PPA? If so how did you remove it? Did you ppa-purge it like we just did now? Or did you just remove the source in software sources?
