Seemingly randomly, when I restart my computer I sometimes no longer have hardware acceleration. I check the driver manager and this is what I see.
I messed around and the only way I could fix it is if I select another driver, apply changes, then reselect the nvidia-driver-450, then reapply, then restart. But this is very annoying. How can I get it to reliably boot with hardware acceleration?

What makes you think that? Symptoms, error messages, etc...
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Re: Sometimes don't have hardware acceleration after reboot
For 100% reliable hardware acceleration after reboots, please lick your finger and stick it in your left ear while restarting your system
In the meantime, please post the output of after a restart without messing with Driver Manager.
In the meantime, please post the output of
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxms
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Re: Sometimes don't have hardware acceleration after reboot
I'm having the same issue. Since the OP hasn't replied, I'll fill in the details (this output when NVidia driver is working):
Timeline:
Installed a fresh copy of Mint 20.04. Then tried to switch to the NVidia driver (recommended version, 450) . Failed because of some unmet dependencies, so decided to use the update manager to update the system in the hope this would fix it. It did. Driver installed, rebooted. Met with resolution of 640*480. Received "Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration" error.
Launched the driver manager as suggested, decided to try every driver from the bottom, working upwards. Eventually, one version worked (435) and provided high resolution, so switched to the recommended version 450, rebooted, continued to work.
After about a day of working, rebooting several times, eventually received error message again. Tried re-installing 435, didn't fix. Tried 450, didn't fix. Tried all the drivers in order, 390 eventually worked.
The general pattern is that eventually the driver stops working, then persistent driver switching eventually works, but it's not a consistent driver version that works, it's just the act of switching that might fix it next time you boot.
I suspect that the initial failure to install the driver because of missing dependencies might have subtly borked the installation.

Re: Sometimes don't have hardware acceleration after reboot
You are not "filling in details" because you do not know what hardware the original poster has. I've seen many people post with this problem and how to correct it depends on the installation history and hardware. That is why we ask if you are not the original poster to create your own thread. That way when we hopefully get it resolved, you can change the title to indicate the thread [SOLVED].ReallyMinty wrote: ⤴Tue Sep 29, 2020 5:29 pm I'm having the same issue. Changing the driver is not solving the problem. The problem is sometimes the driver is loading and sometimes it is not. When it is not you will not have hardware acceleration.

Re: Sometimes don't have hardware acceleration after reboot
Sometimes seems to be the keyword, which is something i would expect from windows before 2021 - - -
I dont seem to have had this problem prior to the last linuxmint version (21) and only since a month or so , last time i had to this :
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=309753&p=2018584#p2018584
this time just rebooting fixed it ...
is this why Linus said if you dont have a $5000 ryzen cpu he cant be held responsible if it doesnt work properly anymore ... kinda defies the purpose, lol ... #offtopic , the method in the post linked worked for me, thats an offline install (but as said: now simply rebooting was enough, there was a power outage though last night i have noticed before systems acting differently on reboot after a complete electriticy blackout as opposed to "just rebooting" or resetting . That's way beyond my braingrade, maybe at electron level , maybe someone else has a pointer as to why that would happen but ... (i know : #offtopic lol)

Re: Sometimes don't have hardware acceleration after reboot
The current version of Linux Mint is 20, so you can not have version 21 installed.thereal-alleycat wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 18, 2021 6:02 am Sometimes seems to be the keyword, which is something i would expect from windows before 2021 - - -

If you have an issue of sometimes the driver installing and sometimes not, when it does not then restart the X Server with Ctl-Alt-Backspace. If that fixes the issue then a more permanent solution is in this post [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let us know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.
