Nvidia driver update problem
Post install of updated Nvidia drivers from the update manager, reboot, login screen is low resolution. Login, desktop is low resolution and get message that Nvidia driver isn't working.
Irritating solution is a simple Ctl+Alt+Backspace. Login screen & desktop at correct resolution, Nvidia driver utilized.
Anyone have a quick fix or can direct me to an appropriate thread? I'm not sure what the problem would be caused by to search accurately.
Thanks!

Re: Nvidia driver update problem
I think your problem is similar to the one in this thread [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let me know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.
If it does not, please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

All looks good. I was expecting to see some unloaded drivers, which I do not see, so I am not quite sure what is happening. The next time you boot, before you restart the X Server, run
inxi -Gx

I'm thinking I'll have to reboot in order to get the low res then post these results while the error is in progress. Weirdly this has occurred on multiple computers post video driver update.

Re: Nvidia driver update problem
I went back to my notes. A person in this thread [SOLVED] Nvidia driver not working until x restart on LM 20.0 cinnamon was having what sounds like a similar issue to you. There is a fix mentioned there, but when I passed it along to someone else they ran into some issues and posted clarifying information in this post. Both of them also had desktops.
Always good to take a Timeshift snapshot beforehand when trying changes in case they don't turn out as you would like.

Thanks very much. I'll give it a try.
I do always make a backup but thought I'd look for a solution.
Appreciate your efforts.

Re: Nvidia driver update problem
I added blue to the display drivers which are active at the point you ran this. Nvidia is listed as an alternate and the renderer is llvmpipe which is software rendering. All three of those contribute to the 1024x768 listed resolution. I would guess that Nvidia just is not getting its modules build and set up for X server as fast as the other drivers are.roboiii wrote: ⤴Fri Jan 08, 2021 2:23 pm Here's one just after the most recent update where the resolution just after login is set low with a message about the Nvidia driver not being active for reference.

Re: Nvidia driver update problem
It's been awhile but I figured this may help someone else since I've had it occur on multiple installs. The quick & easy, though annoying unsatisfactory, solution is Ctl+Alt+Backspace and log in again. Don't know why it works but it does. Opening Nvidia xserver setting from the menu and saving to xconfig seems to make it happen less often particularly after a driver update.
Re: Nvidia driver update problem
If that works, you should try what was mentioned earlier in the thread to get a more permanent solution.roboiii wrote: ⤴Fri Apr 16, 2021 8:48 pm It's been awhile but I figured this may help someone else since I've had it occur on multiple installs.
