Nvidia driver update problem

Post by roboiii »

Post install of updated Nvidia drivers from the update manager, reboot, login screen is low resolution. Login, desktop is low resolution and get message that Nvidia driver isn't working.

Irritating solution is a simple Ctl+Alt+Backspace. Login screen & desktop at correct resolution, Nvidia driver utilized.

Anyone have a quick fix or can direct me to an appropriate thread? I'm not sure what the problem would be caused by to search accurately.

Thanks!

I think your problem is similar to the one in this thread [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let me know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.

If it does not, please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

All looks good. I was expecting to see some unloaded drivers, which I do not see, so I am not quite sure what is happening. The next time you boot, before you restart the X Server, run inxi -Gx and post the output here.

I'm thinking I'll have to reboot in order to get the low res then post these results while the error is in progress. Weirdly this has occurred on multiple computers post video driver update.

I went back to my notes. A person in this thread [SOLVED] Nvidia driver not working until x restart on LM 20.0 cinnamon was having what sounds like a similar issue to you. There is a fix mentioned there, but when I passed it along to someone else they ran into some issues and posted clarifying information in this post. Both of them also had desktops.

Always good to take a Timeshift snapshot beforehand when trying changes in case they don't turn out as you would like.

I added blue to the display drivers which are active at the point you ran this. Nvidia is listed as an alternate and the renderer is llvmpipe which is software rendering. All three of those contribute to the 1024x768 listed resolution. I would guess that Nvidia just is not getting its modules build and set up for X server as fast as the other drivers are.

For reference, here is the information you posted earlier when Nvidia was working properly. Nvidia is listed as the display driver and the renderer.

It's been awhile but I figured this may help someone else since I've had it occur on multiple installs. The quick & easy, though annoying unsatisfactory, solution is Ctl+Alt+Backspace and log in again. Don't know why it works but it does. Opening Nvidia xserver setting from the menu and saving to xconfig seems to make it happen less often particularly after a driver update.

If that works, you should try what was mentioned earlier in the thread to get a more permanent solution.
