<SOLVED> HDMI projector not detected - are drivers required?

Post by Pheeble »

I have a Toshiba laptop (Satellite P750, so quite old) with a HDMI port. It's running Linux Mint 20.1 XFCE without any other problem. If I attach one of my computer monitors via HDMI (using my HDMI 1.4 cable) it is immediately recognized by the OS, and shows up in the Display Settings gui so I can configure it as part of the desktop.

Someone has asked me to help with a stage presentation. The venue uses an Epson EB-2247U projector mounted on the ceiling, with HDMI cabling running through the ceiling and wall to an HDMI port in a wall plate at the side of the stage. I can't get direct access to the projector or access its configuration in any way. When I connect my laptop's HDMI port to the projector wall plate (using the same HDMI cable) no HDMI device is detected, and the projector display shows 'No signal'. There are no dmesg events relating to HDMI, nor any other events when the HDMI cable is attached or removed. I have tried rebooting with the HDMI connection already in place, but it makes no difference.

I have been told that the projector works automatically with Windows. I have downloaded the manual for the projector and it seems to indicate that detection should occur without further intervention, although the manual does only make reference to Windows and MacOS.

Do HDMI devices such as the projector require the OS to have a driver for it, or is it simply a matter of complying with the relevant HDMI standard with no driver required?

Any other ideas? The laptop is one of the forever-accursed Nvidia Optimus variants that use Nvidia Prime. Could that be significant?

I've searched on this forum and generally, but I haven't been able to find anything relevant.

Re: HDMI projector not detected - are drivers required?

Post by Pheeble »

I made multiple attempts to connect to the venue's HDMI projector using different laptops, different kernels and different versions of Linux. Every attempt failed, as though there was no projector attached.

Eventually the person I'm helping to do a stage presentation was able to convince the venue manager to test their stage system. They discovered that their HDMI system is no longer working, and they have now arranged for the system's installers to fix it. So it's a hardware fault after all. Too bad about all the hair I've pulled out trying to solve this one :x
