Can't run 4K 60hz on Linux Mint with my Sapphire RX580
I use a 50 inch 4k Vizio TV as my monitor. Windows 10 can run at 4k 60hz with the RX580 installed , but I hate Windows 10. My 1060 6gb runs 4k 60hz , with no issues on Mint. I even tried my son's 1050ti and it runs it too with no issues. What could be the issue , I meet all the requirements. HDMI is what I run. Cord is not an issue. Is it a driver issue? Best I can get with the 580 is 30hz.

You have not posted any useful info about your system. Whet is the output of

I just tried a friends GTX 1060 3GB and it had no issues running the 4k 60hz by way of HDMI on the Vizio 50 inch. Must be an AMD issue. I have tried the open and proprietary drivers with the RX580. Let me try to retrieve that info you asked for. New to mint so thanks for the reply.

Re: Can't run 4K 60hz on Linux Mint with my Sapphire RX580
-- Gorillawarfare, I'm sorry to read about your frustrating and odd issue. I have enjoyed the exact same card ( Sapphire Nitro+ 8GB version) since May 2017 and still am rocking it.
I see two main differences in your set up vs mine that would seem to matter the most to me:
1. Kernel- you're on 5.4.0-65 where as I'm on 5.8.0-41 ( generic btw..aka I get my kernels via the stock Update Manager and never go through a different approach to ensure a better chance of compatibility with Linux Mint)
2. Your gpu driver says " v 5.6.20" where mine says " driver: amdgpu v: kernel "
I wonder did you install that driver straight from AMD's official Linux driver's site/section? If so, perhaps consider nuking that ( FIRST doing a timeshift backup and image clone such as foxclone image backup ), and just deal with the driver built into the Linux Kernel 5.8 after upgrading to it. If not, then perhaps the only needed solution is for your upgrading the kernel to 5.8.anything
smg here viewtopic.php?f=90&t=341994 mentioned only if you're experiencing problem should you download the drivers from AMD's official site in dealing with Linux. smg has been with this forum a long time I think and from the responses he or she has given, I think smg is a credible enough source of help.
Intel 4790k cpu here with that same video card and have yet to have a problem using it in 1440p at 144hz playing AAA titles since and including Kernel 5.4 ( never have downloading the driver from AMD's official site except in Windows) and my currently Kernel version....Thus IF I'm correct here ( between either nuking the AMD downloading site driver and sticking with straight up Kernel 5.4 or 5.8 kernel built-in driver), there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get 60hz at that UHD ( I don't call 3840x2160p 4k as it isn't true 4k although tv and monitor marketing calls it that) resolution.
Also, if that doesn't do it, perhaps consider a display port cable, but given you mentioned you were using HDMI with Windows 10 and it just worked at 60hz at UHD rez, that might not be applicable (shrugs). I just like to think out-loud and weigh all options. --

1st part answer right now = I don't know. Did you have to install a wifi driver to get your wireless connection to your router working? Or did it work within the LM installation or upon rebooting to the installed drive to the LM desktop? If you had to install a driver, did you do it via Driver Manager, or did you go a more manual route with installing a specific proprietary driver?
I ask because I've read some mixed results depending on the kernel version, the individual wifi ethernet chipset (broadcom, intel, atheros, etc) as well as the laptop manufacturer if or in your case, desktop PC motherboard manufacturer/motherboard model.
2nd part = One way may be as simple as doing it via Synaptic Package Manager and doing a search for AMD and just uninstalling everything you see in AMD ( again...do a system image backup first using something like Foxclone as well as a Timeshift backup in my opinion in case I am wrong in any way and that goofs your system to the point of needing a manual re-install of Linux mint and the system image restoration will easily put you right back to where you were before even posting your 60hz versus 30hz=current problem report). Then reboot the system, and finally update to the newest kernel and see how everything works.
Most often with a kernel update, one often goes from stuff not working to actually working, and it's rarely the opposite given more drivers are built into the newer kernels, but I never 100% trust that possibility until I do a Timeshift backup and System Image backup first. I follow the same security sense before upgrading to any new kernels and grub2 updates as well and so far everything has worked out very well for me. --

This info from the inxi output verifies that:motoryzen wrote: I wonder did you install that driver straight from AMD's official Linux driver's site/section?
Code: Select all

Gorillawarfare,
Removing that driver may or may not help. You would need to use this command:
amdgpu-pro-uninstall
After rebooting, post the output of
xrandr --verbose
again. This info is from extracting the info from the TV’s EDID from the
xrandr --verbose
output:
Note that the maximum dotclock (pixel clock) is only 380 MHz.Monitor ranges (GTF): 23-76Hz V, 15-140kHz H, max dotclock 380MHz
Here is the modeline generated by the cvt utility for a 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz mode. The dotclock, which is 712.75, greatly exceeds the 380 MHz limit.
Even a reduced blanking mode, which uses lower frequencies, has a dotclock too high:cvt 3840 2160

Did you try connecting to the other HDMI port?
Re: Can't run 4K 60hz on Linux Mint with my Sapphire RX580
Thanks for the reply,
Changing HDMI ports didn't help and removing the driver hasn't helped. More searching and trials ahead , I guess.
Appreciate the input!

Re: Can't run 4K 60hz on Linux Mint with my Sapphire RX580
The info from the TV’s EDID is the same with the amdgpu and AMDGPU-Pro drivers.
You stated in your first post that you connected the TV to your son’s PC and got a 60 Hz refresh rate. Is he running Linux?

Re: Can't run 4K 60hz on Linux Mint with my Sapphire RX580
He runs LINUX too , Mint and I believe POP OS, but uses Nvidia cards. A 1060 and a 1080 , no issues running the 60hz , but it uses the proprietary driver. Has the same SETUP except the cards. If I install his cards with the Nvidia proprietary drivers , boom 60 hz. , no problem. He says my AMD cards aren't up to the task.
Hope that made sense.

Re: Can't run 4K 60hz on Linux Mint with my Sapphire RX580
Try using this method to force the 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz mode by using a custom EDID that supports that mode.
Download the 3840x2160.zip file below, which contains the 3840x2160.bin file. Right click on the file and select Extract here.
Use this command to create an edid folder:
Copy the 3840x2160.bin file to /lib/firmware/edid/:
Open the grub file:
Change this line:
To this:
Update grub and reboot:
Download the 3840x2160.zip file below, which contains the 3840x2160.bin file. Right click on the file and select Extract here.
Use this command to create an edid folder:
sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/edid/
Copy the 3840x2160.bin file to /lib/firmware/edid/:
sudo cp ~/Downloads/3840x2160.bin /lib/firmware/edid/
Open the grub file:
xed admin:///etc/default/grub
Change this line:
Code: Select all
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
Code: Select all
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash drm.edid_firmware=edid/3840x2160.bin"
sudo update-grub

Commands all went well , but no change unfortunately.
I do appreciate the time and help.
