Once I had installed Linux Mint 20.1 on my new Lenovo Thinkpad I got the message that hardware acceleration was switched off, and to expect high cpu usage.
I took a look through the forums and found that updating the kernel to 5.8 was the fix.
This indeed worked, but I notice that the kernel is only supported until August 2021.
What happens in September 2021? Will a new LTS kernal be available or do I need to keep updating the kernel?

I know even 5.11.10 is available now through Ubuntu Kernel Update Installer, but so far not through the normal LM Update Manager's Kernel selector option. It's been rock solid for me so far since updating a few days ago. 5.10.17 was rock solid for many weeks for me too

If you choose to only stick with LM's released-to-you via LM Updater or ..if you choose to try the Ubuntu Kernel Updater deal like I have, always do a back up of your system first ( I'm talking TimeShift and if possible a system image backup or clone such as Foxclone's drive clone option) just in case before trying a new major kernel launch. I've never had a problem out of a minor kernel update in Linux Mint since versions 16 and newer.
Major = from 5.4.whatever-whatever to 5.8.whatever-whatever
Minor = from 5.4.1-43 to 5.4.3-43 ( yes..probably made up to an extent but you get the idea I think)
Regardless if you choose to do nothing yet, don't sweat it. The Linux Mint team has done a stellar job on ensuring we always get updated rock solid LTS kernels on time. --

Re: Intel Graphics and Hardware Acceleration Message and 5.8 Kernel Support
I am sure that there will be an update available, I just wondered if that would entail a whole new 20 release - Linux Mint 20.2 - or if I could just use the Mint Kernel Updater to get the next LTS kernel.
Re: Intel Graphics and Hardware Acceleration Message and 5.8 Kernel Support
-- I'm willing to bet a week's pay you should be able to get that newer Kernel via the Mint kernel updater within Update Manager. It just depends on when they launch the next LM dot # mint version I suppose. But sincerely I don't know for sure. It depends on things that are beyond my upfront memory and understanding that people like SMG, AndyH, and other more experience Linux veterans here know more about from experience. Hopefully one or more of them will chime in with better info. --

Re: Intel Graphics and Hardware Acceleration Message and 5.8 Kernel Support
No in the first case, and it depends on the second. While Ubuntu kernel 5.10 has been available for some time in the repositories, it's labelled
oem
and it's generic
only. The 5.10 kernel referred to by the other poster above is not the same kernel as the Ubuntu 5.10 kernel, so you've been given completely wrong information. The linked article refers to GNU/Linux kernel 5.10 as being LTS, which only means that the GNU/Linux team will maintain their 5.10 release as LTS, but it does not logically follow that Ubuntu kernel 5.10 will be LTS because Ubuntu build their own kernels and decide for themselves what will and won't be LTS.So, to cut a short story long,
Ubuntu kernel 5.10 != GNU/Linux kernel 5.10
https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle
As you can see from that page, under the heading "Long term support and interim releases", there is no interim release Standard Support kernel version number available yet. Ubuntu will release a replacement kernel for the interim 5.8 Ubuntu kernel when they are ready. This means that if you must use Ubuntu kernel 5.8 then you need to stay on the short-term interim releases into the future. Since Ubuntu don't generally break your system by not providing a way forward, you can expect another, later Ubuntu interim kernel to be backported, hence there will be a path forward. We just don't know what the next interim Ubuntu kernel version will be.
However, while we don't know, we can make a very good guess. Hirsute Hippo ships with Ubuntu kernel 5.11, and that is likely to become the next short-term release version for Focal Fossa, though it's not guaranteed.
Re: Intel Graphics and Hardware Acceleration Message and 5.8 Kernel Support
Same problem here.
Just installed Mint 20.1 on my new ASRock DeskMini H470 with Intel i5-11400 (UHD 730 graphics) and I receive the message of missing hardware acceleration.
A second problem that I have is that I cannot get two monitors to work at the same time (one connected to the Display Port and another connected to the HDMI port). One monitor works, either connected to the DP or connected to HDMI, but not two together (which works in Win10 after installing the latest Intel Graphics driver).
I was advised to install Mint 20.1 Edge in order to get the 5.8 kernel --> problem stayed
I was advised to install Xanmod Edge *which brought my kernel to 5.11 --> problem stayed
I was advised to install the Kisak MESA ppa --> problem stayed
So I was wondering if this is only a problem of the Rocket Lake CPU / UHD 730 graphics or that also the chipset (Intel H470) in involved?
What could I try next? Or, when can I expect a solution in Mint?

Re: Intel Graphics and Hardware Acceleration Message and 5.8 Kernel Support
If it was the same problem as the OP of this thread, then you would be able to install the 5.8 kernel and get graphics and not have any errors.
What you describe does not sound like the same problem and you have different hardware. That means it is best if you follow the forum rules and create your own thread for your issue. Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help! explains the data we need to be able to help you. Please provide that system data in your first post.
