Nvidia GTX 1060 / idle temps

Post by BlueEagle »

Hi,
I recently upgraded my motherboard and my CPU from Asus H110I-plus / i5 6600 to Asrock B560M-itx / i5 11400. The rest, including my GTX 1060 (MSI, ITX-version, 6 GB) stayed exactly the same.

While I could enjoy low idle GPU temps with the passive fan at about 36-38°C, after the upgrade it's rather around 48-52°C for no apparent reason.

I'm using Linux Mint 20.1 and I tried the following, without success:
- Updating the NVidia driver to 460 from 450
- Setting the PowerMizer to "Adaptive" instead of "Auto"

Notes:
- Idle CPU temps are fine at about 30°C (new Noctua D9L fan in silent mode).
- Case airflow is good (NZXT H210 with 4 BeQuiet fans) and never was a problem before.
- I could measure that the actual total system power (idle) drain is about 15-20W higher as before.
- For no reason, the power state regularly goes to P0 / 24W drain, see result from nvidia-smi at the bottom of the post.
- On load, I now hear a small coil whine I had never heard before on this GPU.

Does anyone have an idea where to start to solve this annoying issue, which causes frequent starts-stops of the fan and drains power for nothing?

Thanks!
Alex

ObHint: Different motherboard, different CPU, completely different power characteristics.
Does anyone have an idea where to start to solve this annoying issue...
Annoying is relative.

Of course, you don't give us the necessary data (inxi -Fxz) to allow us to suggest that a different, higher version kernel, such as the latest 5.8, is required, so we come back full circle to the ObHint: Different motherboard, different CPU, completely different power characteristics. Nothing in Linux Mint will have caused this, except perhaps due to your not having installed a shiny new 5.8 series kernel for that shiny new i5-11400 CPU.

The other possible source of your annoyance is the nVidia driver. You have four basic choices, if the problem persists after upgrading the kernel to 5.8, a) drop back successive versions of the driver in case you find one that doesn't annoy you, b) don't use the nVidia driver at all but use the kernel modesetting driver instead, c) research to see if there are any xorg.conf settings that can be used to reduce your annoyance, d) go to a hardware site and talk about video card P states going to P0/24W drain, idle CPU temperatures, system power idle drain being 15-20W higher, and Noctua D9L fans in silent mode.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll give the shiny kernel 5.8 a try.

Just in case, I'd gladly add my current inxi -Fxz:

That 5.8 kernel is essential for your CPU. It might not fix the issue, but it's still needed.
