Computer freezing for a few seconds after a kernel update

Post by optimho »

The computer keeps freezing for few seconds every now and then, This has happened after a Mint update, unfortunately I am not quite sure exactly which one was responsible creating the issue I experienced.

I figured it out after some time and thought to post what worked here, hopefully it helps some one else

I am currently using:
Cinamon version 4.8.6
kernel 5.4.0-70-generic
processor AMD Ryzen 16
graphics AMD Radeon RX580
mother board GA- X470 AORUS ULTRA

When the display froze and I listening to music through my browser (Youtube or the likes), the music would keep playing, so it was a graphics problem in hindsight.

I upgraded the bios, no change
I upgraded the Kernel no change
I upgraded the graphics drivers from https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... eon-rx-580 and this finally did the trick.

the first time it reboots, it takes longer as it has a bit of overhead to take care.

after that, it will be normal again.

This was an ongoing issue I was having for a few weeks.
The things I tried to correct the issue spanned over a few weeks.
In that time there was also a kernel upgrade that I installed and that did not help me in my situation.
