Can't get 60hz on Displayport with 4k monitor (PB27UQ - Asus)

Post by n00b5 »

Greetings, I recently switched from Windows to Linux Mint and realized that something was off. I couldn't get 60hz no matter what I tried. I tried downloading the latest graphics drivers and I can't switch from 30hz to 60hz in Display or Nvidia X Server Settings though my monitor supports it. Help would very much be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, n00b5.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Please also supply the output of xrandr --verbose and enclose the results between code markers.

Right now I'm running on 1440p @60hz but I really wanna use the full capacity of my monitor because that's what I bought it for. Thanks in advance. Yes 60hz is supported for my monitor( I could do it and still can do it on Windows without any problems).

The xrandr info does confirm what you are seeing.

Code: Select all

  3840x2160 (0x1c0) 262.750MHz +HSync -VSync +preferred
        h: width 3840 start 3888 end 3920 total 4000 skew 0 clock 65.69KHz
        v: height 2160 start 2163 end 2168 total 2191 clock 29.98Hz

  2560x1440 (0x1c2) 241.500MHz +HSync +VSync *current
        h: width 2560 start 2608 end 2640 total 2720 skew 0 clock 88.79KHz
        v: height 1440 start 1443 end 1448 total 1481 clock 59.95Hz
The only suggestion I have is to try the Nvidia-450 driver and see if that provides the higher refresh rate.

There are others on the forum who are better with this type of issue than I am. Maybe they will be able to provide a better solution.

Some additional info needs to be obtained. Use this command to create an xorg.conf file:
sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "nvidia"
   Option "ModeDebug" "true"
EndSection
Log out and back in. Use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log file to terminal.com pastebin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999

Post the URL address that displays in the Terminal window.

Some error must have been made. The log should list a lot more info on video modes. The xorg.conf file was created but perhaps it has an error. Open the file and post it’s contents: xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Did you log out and back in before uploading the file?

These lines are in the log:

   Option "ModeValidation" "NoDisplayPortBandwidthCheck, NoExtendedGpuCapabilitiesCheck"
EndSection
Log out and back in. If the 60 Hz refresh rate is not used, then upload the Xorg.0.log again.

That didn’t work. My screen just shut down when I logged down so I restarted and and after I restarted I chose Linux mint again and the screen still shut down. On the boot menu log thing it said something like “frequency can’t be used” before the screen shut down. Idk how to get back into my machine now.

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter virtual console tty1. Use this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

If you can't enter tty1, then select Advanced options > Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping it, or tap the Esc key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt ” and press ENTER. Press ENTER again.

Use this command to change the file permissions to read and write: mount -o remount,rw /

Remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

This info is extracted from the monitor’s EDID, which comes from the xrandr --verbose output:
Monitor ranges (bare limits): 35-60Hz V, 135-135kHz H, max dotclock 600MHz
The Horizontal frequency is only listed as 135 kHz, which is incorrect. There should be a range of values, just the same as for the Vertical frequency, which is 35-60 Hz.

These values are from ASUS:
Digital Signal Frequency : 24~160 KHz (H) / 23~80 Hz (V)
https://www.asus.com/Displays-Desktops/ ... /techspec/

Try repeating the previous steps in creating the xorg.conf file but use these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
   HorizSync 24.0 - 160.0
   VertRefresh 23.0 - 80.0
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "nvidia"
   Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false"
   Option "ModeDebug" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
   Option "ModeValidation" "NoDisplayPortBandwidthCheck, NoExtendedGpuCapabilitiesCheck"
EndSection

Sorry for the late reply. I’m not sure you’re still here but I kind of gave up trying after the first error but now I decided to try again but I’m sorry to say that the most recent solution you gave me didn’t work either. Thanks in advance if you still want to help me. I guess I have to get used to a blurrier resolution on my screen until new drivers hopefully will fix this problem, whenever that may be, or maybe I will just switch back to Windows for the time being. Thanks for everything that have tried helping me through so far.

I don’t understand (`_´)ゞ. I’m so frustrated right now. I even got a new 3070 graphics card and re-download both Linux Mint and my graphics drivers and that didn’t help it either.  I really want to enjoy Linux since I hate Window’s spying.
