My monitor is a Asus Rog Swift pg278q. the max resolution it is capable of is 2560 x 1440 at 144hz
I have it connected to my laptop (lenovo yoga 730 13kbi) via a thunderbolt usb c to displayport cable. This setup is working in windows, but I cannot get it set up correctly in Linux Mint.
It only has the options of 2 resolutions: 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600.

The monitor’s EDID can’t be read. Try using these commands:

The display app in linux mint shows the option for the correct resolution but it will not turn the screen on. I read somewhere while researching that the maximum frames I can display over thunderbolt is 60 fps? I tried changing that command to 60. it accepted the command but it did not add the option for 60 hz

Sorry I'm relatively new to Linux so I'm not used to these types of problems!

My other laptop reads the the display over a hdmi to displayport cable. Unfortunately I do not have that option with this laptop!

Anything else I should try? let me know if you require outputs because I don't usually post on forums. :)

I tried changing it to 50hz, it does do something... it gives multiple options for 149.97!
The monitor displayed a message saying out of range too.

But you said the same setup works correctly in Windows. Is your laptop a dual-boot with Windows.

The dot clock (pixel clock) frequency will need to be changed for a different refresh rate.

Try using this 120 Hz mode:

My apologies, I didn't check what the refresh rate was in windows! your first command worked perfectly by the way, its outputting at 120hz!

The only problem now is, how do I keep it from reverting back to its previous settings each time i start up the system?
I read somewhere that you can write a script to do it at start up but I have no idea how to do that!

Use the 3 xrandr commands in the Terminal. Then open the Display program and click Apply. This saves the settings in the cinnamon-monitors.xml file.
Then open the File Manager. Hidden files should be made visible. Open the .profile file and add the first 2 xrandr commands at the bottom.

Would you check if the refresh rate used in Windows was 144 Hz.
