[SOLVED] No hardware acceleration with Intel UHD 730 graphics

Post by Toontje »

Just installed Mint 20.1 on my new ASRock DeskMini H470 with Intel i5-11400 (UHD 730 graphics) and I receive the message of missing hardware acceleration.
A second problem that I have is that I cannot get two monitors to work at the same time (one connected to the Display Port and another connected to the HDMI port). One monitor works, either connected to the DP or connected to HDMI, but not two together (which works in Win10 after installing the latest Intel Graphics driver).

I was advised to install Mint 20.1 Edge in order to get the 5.8 kernel --> problem stayed
I was advised to install Xanmod Edge *which brought my kernel to 5.11 --> problem stayed
I was advised to install the Kisak MESA ppa --> problem stayed

So I was wondering if this is only a problem of the Rocket Lake CPU / UHD 730 graphics or that also the chipset (Intel H470) in involved?

What could I try next? Or, when can I expect a solution in Mint?

the output of inxi -Fxxxrz is as follows:

That is because there is no graphics driver installed. When no graphics driver is installed then Cinnamon runs in software rendering mode and that message pops on your screen.

This is probably related to the fact your system does not have a graphics driver installed. I do not know if software rending is able to push graphics to two monitors.

Based on the investigation in the thread Black Screen Z590 Chipset i7-10700k Intel UHD 630 Graphics, we found the 5.10-oem kernel resolved the issue on that equipment.

The errors listed in that thread mention both Tiger Lake and Rocket Lake, so I'm crossing my fingers for you that kernel will work. Let us know because I'm sure others will run into the issue as well.

If that does not work, it's possible some additional firmware may be needed. You have very, very new equipment.

SMG, you are a genious!

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04b
did the trick

The stupid thing is that I read that thread before, but that was after I already installed Xanmod Edge (which installed kernel 5.11 which was not a solution) and I assumed that if 5.11 didn't work, 5.10 would also not work.
After that I reinstalled Mint Edge (with 5.8 kernel) and I posted my question here. Now, going from 5.8 to 5.10, my second screen popped on and the message about running without hardware acceleration disappeared.

Thanks again!

Now the output of inxi -Fxxxrz is as follows:

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear it worked.

There was another i915 driver patch in the latest version you just installed (5.10.0-1021-oem). Another forum member let me know yesterday that fixed an issue that had popped up for them in an earlier version of the 5.10-oem.
