[SOLVED] Mint 20.1: External monitor via Dell D6000 dock

Post by alanlinux825 »

Hello Mint Forum,

I'm trying to use my Acer Swift3 (with a standalone nvidia GeForce MX350 graphics card) in "clam mode" and connect it to two external monitors.

One monitor is connected directly via the HDMI port on the laptop and it works well.

The other monitor is connected via the DP port on a Dell D6000 dock, but I cannot even see this monitor in the Displays setting.

The dock itself works, because other devices connected to the dock work (e.g., ethernet cable, headphones via usb, webcam, speakers via 3.5mm jack). Mint can see all these devices without problems.

I've tried installing the DisplayLink drivers for Ubuntu (both releases 5.4 and 5.3.1) and it didn't work. I've also tried using Mint's Driver Manager and install the proprietary nvidia driver, but it still didn't work. So far I have not been able to see the monitor detected in Mint.

The strange part is that it used to work on the same laptop with the same setup when I was using Lubuntu 20.04.2 (yes, I'm trying to migrate to Mint :-) ), and it even worked on another laptop running the same version of Lubuntu.

Just wondering if anyone here could give me some directions to make it work. Any advice will be much appreciated.

You are using the MX350 as an external gpu? While I know external GPUs can be used with Mint, I do not know if yours is being recognized as such with the default install. Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.
alanlinux825 wrote: Wed Apr 14, 2021 6:53 amThe other monitor is connected via the DP port on a Dell D6000 dock, but I cannot even see this monitor in the Displays setting.

I've tried installing the DisplayLink drivers for Ubuntu (both releases 5.4 and 5.3.1) and it didn't work.
I did not realize there was a newer DisplayLink driver, but I see it came out on April 6, 2021.

I helped someone in this thread Cannot connect/detect external monitor using a DisplayLink [solved] who used the 5.3.1 driver and the instructions from the patch.

You are the first person I've seen who has tried the 5.4 driver, so I do not know if any tweaks are needed for it to work properly. It's possible there may be something in your install of Mint which may be a factor. We will not know until you post your info.

Hi SMG,

Thank you for the quick response!

It's just a graphics card that comes with the laptop when I bought it, so it's NOT used as an external gpu. Sorry for the confusion ("standalone" was a bad choice of word).

Thanks! I followed the thread and found this page, and I'm going to try using the 5.3.1 DisplayLink driver with the patch and see how it goes. I'll post my findings later.

Thanks again!

Just tried reinstalling the DisplayLink driver 5.3.1 with the patch (link here: https://www.displaylink.org/forum/showp ... ostcount=2) but no luck... still can't see the other monitor connected via the D6000 dock :(

Make sure you have the latest BIOS/UEFI for your computer. I've helped several people who found all they needed was an update there to get things working.

I do not know the specifics of your laptop, but many laptops with dual graphics do not have all external ports connected to both graphics cards. That means some ports are only connected to one graphics card and will not work if the drivers for that card are not installed. Right now, your system is only using the Intel graphics.

Graphics: Device-1: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
chip ID: 8086:8a52
Device-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce MX350] vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: nouveau v: kernel bus ID: 2b:00.0
chip ID: 10de:1c96
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa compositor: marco v: 1.24.0
resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Iris Plus Graphics (ICL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6 direct render: Yes

If the BIOS/UEFI update does not work (or there is not an update), I suggest installing the Nvidia driver and then checking to see if the nvidia-prime-applet is showing in the panel in the lower right. You probably want to be running in On-Demand mode. In that mode the line I put in blue above will have both nvidia and modesetting. You can run inxi -Gx to see just the graphics results.

There are currently some bugs in a few files which is causing the nvidia-prime-applet not to show/work properly. After you install the Nvidia driver and reboot, if you run inxi -Gx and see N/A for the Nvidia driver and the nvidia-prime-applet is not in your panel, then your system files are probably affected. The fourth post in this thread Disappearing Nvidia drivers :Prime the prime suspect? describes a one line code fix (editing line 34) for a know bug with some of the graphics files related to Nvidia.

That should bring back the applet after you reboot. You then can switch to On-Demand mode and reboot and should see the nvidia driver loaded and hopefully all your external screens will then have displays. I think the combo of the missing driver and not being set up in On-demand mode may be why the fix from the other thread did not work.

You also have very new equipment and it may run better using the 5.8 kernel which is available in Update Manager. If you want to try it, open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Thank you again for the quick and detailed response!

Short report: I went through all the step (except for using the 5.8 kernel) and still doesn't work...

Just checked on the official Acer website and my BIOS is the latest version (1.18) already.

In fact there were some issues when I installed the Nvidia driver (I tried both 460 and 450, which shown in the Driver Manager). After I've selected the Nvidia driver and clicked "Apply Changes", the status bar showed up and started running... but it ended quite abruptly and then the laptop fans started. I checked with htop and saw that a couple of processes were using the CPUs, but I forgot to write down the names. I remember one is called "frontend" and the other is something like "fixing secure boot" (forgot the exact paths for both of them).

The CPUs kept running for 10+ minutes without much happening, so I tried rebooting, but it was not allowed. And then I did systemctl reboot -i as suggested in the terminal.

Afterwards, I tried updating the 5.4 kernel from 5.4.0-71 to 5.4.0-72 in Update Manager (just trying out other ways... as it worked with my Lubuntu 20.04.2 on the same laptop before and on another one, both still using kernel 5.4). But when I did that, it asked me to fix it manually with dpkg --configure -a. I guess I may have broken something when I forced the reboot...

but long story short: I think I've successfully applied the nvidia-driver-450 now, but it still doesn't work (see below).

I went through this and changed line 34 (basically adding "|| true" to kind of bypassing the condition, right?). It did bring back the applet, but even after switching to On-Demand mode and reboot, I still don't see the nvidia driver.

Here is the output from inxi -Gx

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
Device-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce MX350] vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: N/A bus ID: 2b:00.0

As I said above, I'd like to try other fixes before adventuring to kernel 5.8, as it used to work with kernel 5.4 in lubuntu 20.04.2...

Do you have any other suggestions? Or did I mess up anything in the process?

I've finally got the nvidia driver installed. Below is the output from inxi -Gx:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: i915 v: kernel
           bus ID: 00:02.0
Device-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce MX350] vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: nvidia v: 460.56
           bus ID: 2b:00.0
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting,nvidia unloaded: fbdev,nouveau,vesa
           resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Iris Plus Graphics (ICL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6 direct render: Yes
I found this guide: https://itsfoss.com/nvidia-linux-mint/
and ran sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall. It said there was one unmet dependency, and I just installed that manually by sudo apt install nvidia-kernel-source-460.

But I still can't see the other monitor connected via the Dell D6000 dock (I've already changed the nvidia driver to On-Demand mode in the applet)...

Is there a USB-C port on the laptop that you can connect the dock to?

Use this command in the Terminal to get more info: xrandr --verbose; echo +; ls /sys/class/drm/
In the Menu at the top, select Edit > Select All and then Edit > Copy

Open the Mint Forum reply window and select </> at the top. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code display window.

Yes, I connect the dock to the laptop at a USB-C Thunderbolt port.

Actually (if it's helpful at all) this is the laptop spec page on acer official website: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/IL/content/m ... .HUKEC.001

Re: Mint 20.1: External monitor via Dell D6000 dock

I asked about the USB-C port because it doesn’t need the DisplayLink driver, so I thought you had connected to a USB3.0 port.

You should not need the Nvidia driver installed because the USB-C port is usually internally connected to the Intel GPU.

What is the native resolution of the undetected monitor?

The support page Driver Installation Guide for Dell Universal Dock (D6000 series) does list needing the DisplayPort driver in order to get video.
alanlinux825 wrote: Wed Apr 14, 2021 6:53 amThe strange part is that it used to work on the same laptop with the same setup when I was using Lubuntu 20.04.2 (yes, I'm trying to migrate to Mint :-) ), and it even worked on another laptop running the same version of Lubuntu.
I would think the underlying files in Lubuntu would be similar to Mint. I do not have any other ideas at the present time why you might be seeing this difference between the distros.

I don't have that info right now, but I believe it's 1920 x 1080. I'll confirm that next week.

Just to add that this two-external-monitor setup works on Windows 10 that I dual-boot with the same laptop, so it shouldn't be any hardware issue.

The other weird thing is that everything else from the dock works. I have also tried the following:
1. Plugging the monitor to the other DP port (there are two) on the same dock; didn't work
2. Plugging in another monitor that works on the laptop's HDMI port to the DP port on the same dock; didn't work
3. Swapping the two monitors in the ports they connect to the laptop; still the one connected to the dock didn't work

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thank you! I'll try to install the DisplayLink driver again via this link next week, and let you know if it works.

Yeah, I also thought I'd be able to use the same setup after switching from Lubuntu to Mint.

Thank you for your suggestions so far. Please let me know if you've any other thoughts. I'll keep googling for solutions in the meantime...

Do you know which version of the DisplayLink driver you used with Lubuntu?

It's 5.3.1.34.

By the way, not sure if it's related, but I think I still have secure boot enabled in the BIOS. Does that matter at all? I asked because I remember there were some messages related to secure boot during the nvidia driver installation...

You can check to see if it is enabled by running mokutil --sb-state.

I've finally got it to work! After all these driver/setting tweaks, it turns out the most important thing is to disable secure boot in the firmware settings.

I just chose UEFI firmware setting from GRUB, changed Secure Boot from Enabled to Disabled, and then went to Save and Exit (and rebooted).

And then it worked (Mint detected the second monitor when during the login screen just like what I have when using Lubuntu).

Thank you so much, SMG and roblm, for your help throughout the process! :-)

Secure Boot prevents unsigned third party drivers from installing. It appears you verified it works on your computer.

Glad all is working now. Please go to your first post in this thread and click the pencil icon to edit the title of that post and add [SOLVED] to the beginning so others with a similar issue will know there is a solution in this thread.
