[SOLVED]Hardware refresh rate spec differs from actual in xrandr

I just hooked up a new ThinkVision S28u-10 to my ThinkPad P50 via the supplied HDMI. I changed my graphics driver to NVDIA-384 because there were issues getting the monitor to work at all as an external display. The products specs list the resolution at 3840 x 2160 and refresh rate at 60 Hz, but I'm not able to use a refresh rate > 30 Hz and the output of

So, I'm pretty sure that there may be an issue with the driver, but I'm starting a thread here to try to illicit some feedback from others who may have done this kind of troubleshooting in the past. Some more set-up:

Mint 18.3 using XFCE

Use this command in the Terminal to get more info: inxi -Fxrz; echo +; xrandr --verbose

In the Menu at the top, select Edit > Select All and then Edit > Copy

Open the Mint Forum reply window and select </> at the top. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code display window.

I’m not sure from looking at the inxi output if the Nvidia driver is loading. To verify this, Use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log file to terminal.com pastebin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999

Post the URL address that displays in the Terminal window.

While checking the ReadMe for BIOS Update Utility (Linux), I noticed version 1.57 lists
"- (Fix) Fixed an issue where the display audio feature on the HDMI monitor might not work when the "Graphics Device" setting was [Discrete Graphics] in Thinkpad Setup."

which seems to indicate this is an Optimus-style laptop. So I checked the ThinkPad P50 Platform Specifications and found:
"Max resolution:
3840x2160@60Hz (DisplayPort via Mini DisplayPort cable);
3840x2160@60Hz (Thunderbolt);
3840x2160@30Hz (HDMI)"


You indicated you are using the supplied HDMI cable, so maybe that is why you are getting 30Hz given that is the listed max in the specs?
(I presume you have the BIOS set to Discrete given the inxi output only shows the Nvidia card.)

FYI-1: The NVIDIA Quadro M1000M is still supported and the latest driver available for it is the Nvidia-460.

FYI-2: Support for LM18 (all versions) ends in two weeks (April 2021).

@smg super helpful, you're right, I need to use a DP cable for 60 Hz, which I've done - Thanks! However, I'm unable to update my BIOS following the installation instructions on Lenovo Support for the current BIOS utility.

I've also realized that I can't set my current BIOS to Discrete and have both displays work, the display on my laptop is completely black in that mode. The only outstanding issue I'm trying to fix is my mouse leaves trails if I'm not using Discrete, something that is of course fixed in later version of LM, which I've tested on a USB stick to verify. That probably means that the provided graphics driver is the later version. I guess I should just plan to update LM sooner than later.

Lenovo has a community support forum. I don't necessarily see an answer to the question on this thread Lenovo P50 how to upgrade BIOS, but maybe there are other threads on that forum with something which will help you.

Sounds like you may have confirmed only the Intel is wired to the laptop display. Many dual graphics laptops do not have both graphics cards wired to both the laptop display and external graphics ports.

Most of the versions run from the ISO run using Intel mode. Intel has continued to update the i915 driver, so that may be the difference you see. Or it could be the other files which related to graphics in Mint which have been updated in newer versions.

In order to be able to use switchable graphics (Intel and Nvidia), you will want to make sure you have the BIOS/UEFI set to switchable/hybrid (or whatever term is used) and not Discrete so the necessary files to support switchable graphics are installed.

Thanks, I've marked the issue as SOLVED. Now I ned to search for solutions to upgrading BIOS, I've started a thread in the Lenovo community forums, but generally I think there may be an issue preventing me from upgrading in legacy mode, rather than UEFI mode.
