Switching from Vesa to Radeon
I needed to install 4.3 Opengl for a game to work as my system only had 3.1
Using radeon driver successfully for years I thought I would try amdgpu etc to see if opengl would upgrade. As none of the options worked I was left with 'hardware acceleration not loaded' errors...very common as I've found reading many posts. People were helped by upgrading kernels, removing multi drivers. I did all this and now have a vesa driver running with radeon installed not being utilized or recognized.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf - doesn't exist in my version. Also module assistant only shows nvidia options.

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
Several months ago I installed the amdgpu driver and it made the ingame experience glitchy so I removed it. The system fell back to the radeon driver and all was okay again. I hoped if I tried again upgrading opengl things would work okay. I can't fall back on radeon this time...I'm in a basically unusable OS with vesa. Can someone tell me where grub.cfg is and what it is called in the latest mint 20 ...usually /etc/X11/grub.cfg

Use this command in the Terminal to get more info:
In the Menu at the top, select Edit > Select All and then Edit > Copy
Open the Mint Forum reply window and select
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxrz; echo +; ls /lib/modprobe.d/; echo +; ls /etc/modprobe.d/
Open the Mint Forum reply window and select
</>
at the top. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code display window, which is more compact, easier to read and preserves the formatting.-

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
This info in the Inxi output shows you previously tried installing the AMDGPU-Pro driver, which does not support your video card. That’s where the blacklist-radeon.conf file came from.
Remove that file:
Code: Select all
No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu-pro-local.list
Remove that file:
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-radeon.conf

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
So I hashtagged radeon and the amd microcode blacklist. The whole monitor is being used now and I'm in safemode with an unusual phenomenon happening. All files and sentences are only 3 letters long. Firefox will be Fir etc.
Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
You need to explain all of that more clearly.Figleaf2021 wrote: ⤴Fri Apr 16, 2021 2:03 pm So I hashtagged radeon and the amd microcode blacklist. Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
I went into the the blacklist conf file and put hashtags in front of each line. I can see that it is better to just delete the file. You need to explain all of that more clearly.
Before hashtagging I had half the screen stuck in vesa driver mode. Afterwards the whole screen is being utilized again but now I appear to be in a faulty safe mode without graphical acceleration and words are truncated as well as bash commands down to 3 or 4 letters only. If I type out sudo synaptic for example, only sudo will show. When I press enter synaptic starts. The output for inxi is illegible now so I can't see what is loaded.
Thank you for taking time to respond.
Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
A number of people with the oibaf-ppa (which is installed on your computer) ran into an issue with everything only having four letters. Can only see first 4 characters Mint 20Figleaf2021 wrote: ⤴Fri Apr 16, 2021 2:03 pmAll files and sentences are only 3 letters long. Firefox will be Fir etc.
Reverting to a Timeshift snapshot of your system before you began making all these changes might be the best way to get your system working again.
While one can simulate a higher OpenGL version that what the hardware can do, that would be a software simulation of OpenGL. I presume that was what you were trying to do since newer hardware is how one upgrades their system to a higher OpenGL version.Figleaf2021 wrote: ⤴Thu Apr 15, 2021 11:57 pmI needed to install 4.3 Opengl for a game to work as my system only had 3.1

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
I'm reposting as I discovered konsole works for me right now... LXterm is glitching at 4 characters and beyond. I removed oibaf with commands below but hasn't reverted properly. So the new question is if I'm now using ati and vesa...how do I switch to radeon.

To revert to standard Ubuntu drivers type the following in a prompt shell:
$ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
Thanks smg. The photo describes what is happening. I might have better luck rebooting to a rescue shell and try to remove obaif somehow. I never timeshifted so if I can't repair this I'll have to reinstall. roblm's avatar is hilariously pointing out how I feel about that.A number of people with the oibaf-ppa (which is installed on your computer) ran into an issue with everything only having four letters.
Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
I don’t know what version of Radeon Software for Linux, which contains the AMDGPU-Pro driver, you had installed, but there were 3 older versions which removed the radeon driver during the uninstallation process. Use this command to check if that driver is installed:
If it’s not installed, then use this command:
apt policy xserver-xorg-video-radeon
If it’s not installed, then use this command:
apt install xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
Does this appear to be the right radeon version?
I reposted the inxi output a couple messages ago since removing obaif ppa and amdgpu etc and it is saying 'ati' is loaded.
The package xserver-xorg-video-ati isn't installed on my system. I'm still confused how to move radeon from unloaded to loaded. At least vesa isn't the predominant driver now. I've tried several kernels over the past months to see if I get better functionality in games and I keep coming back to the 4.15 kernel that came with the system. I guess the accompanying radeon driver version is the best one for me? But not loaded presently.

What is very confusing is the ati driver. According to the info in the Synaptic Package Manager, it is actually a so called wrapper that loads another sub-driver. It was important in loading drivers for ATI (older AMD) video cards but the developers still continue to use this confusing system by listing it alongside radeon and amdgpu. The package xserver-xorg-video-ati, which contains the ati driver, can be safely removed without having any effect on the graphics.
Use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log file to terminal.com pastebin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
Post the URL address that displays in the Terminal window.

I didn’t see anything of significance in the log. You can try using this command as a last resort, before doing a re-installation.
Code: Select all
apt install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-radeon libdrm-radeon1 xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-all xserver-xorg-input-all

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
The only thing that stood out for me in termbin was fbdev...which may be an issue.
[ 54.164] (II) LoadModule: "fbdev"
[ 54.164] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module fbdev
[ 54.184] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
I reinstalled radeon as you suggested and no luck...I'm still in safemode with 4 character names.
Thank you for all the suggestions Rob and smg for pointing out the obaif issue. I learned a lot about my system with all the commands you provided.

Code: Select all

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
Thanks Rob.
After days of getting nowhere I formatted the drive. It wasn't just the driver issue anymore as I was glitching at 4 characters. Removing obaif and reverting to ubuntu drivers didn't change anything. I am amazed how robust package managers are these days. It would be really great to see a better module manager than module assistant. One that allows you to put radeon or nvidia at the forefront and shelf vesa etc.
I found a site that helped some people stuck with vesa. The files that helped were
I imagine your suggestion would also help. The link for above code can be found here:

Re: Switching from Vesa to Radeon
Timeshift snapshots can be a big help when experimenting with different options. Take a snapshot manually before you make the change then if the change does not work to your liking you can easily revert to your prior situation.
