I currently have a GeForce GTX 1050 (nvidia) graphics card that I am replacing with an AMD Radeon RX 5500XT.
I could not find any documentation for the proper way to perform this replacement. Besides the obvious hardware swap, what steps should be taken for proper installation/configuration?

The only action you need to do is remove the Nvidia driver if it is installed. Use this command in the Terminal:
Shut off the PC and switch video cards. When you boot to the desktop, if there is a message about there being no hardware acceleration, then you will need to install a newer kernel.
sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*
