Plugged in second external monitor, can't detect laptop monitor anymore

Post by Antaerion »

First, I apologize. I am not the best with the command prompt and am a bit befuddled as to what just happened. I now have both external monitors working, but after plugging them in, and restarting my computer, my laptop monitor now turns off half way through the boot. By which, I mean, it works up until about half way through the boot. When I bring up the Display tool, it only shows the two external Dell monitors. When I click Detect Displays, nothing shows up.

I have tried searching, but nothing seems to jump out at me.

I have a Sager NP8962 Here is the output from System Info:

Did you check to see if the machine still boots correctly (meaning sees your laptop screen), when you unplug your external monitors and reboot?
Have you checked your Bios to see if it sees all three screens when they are plugged in?
Do you see any Bios errors when you run Bios diagnostics with and without all monitors?

FWIW these are items I'd check...

Yes, as I indicated, the laptop screen turns off half-way through the boot. It works just fine up until that point.

OK, I followed the steps on: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... a.html?m=1 and, after removing the Nvidia drivers, my laptop monitor turned on again. But then when I installed them again, it turned off once more.

OK, I went through and updated the kernel and installed the Mint 20.1 update, and ran the following command, and currently all of the monitors are working.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
Here is the revised system info output:

The resolution of the laptop monitor is wrong, and it isn't getting the full 144Hz refresh rate, but at least it is working. That said, this is obviously using the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver.

Now I'm going to apply the nvidia-driver-460 (had used the -450 driver previously when it wasn't working).

You have a laptop with dual graphics (Intel and Nvidia). Not all laptops with dual graphics have both graphics wired to all ports with screens attached. It sounds like your computer has only Intel wired to work the laptop screen. That means to get both the laptop screen and the external monitors working simultaneously, you probably have to have your nvidia-prime-applet set to On-Demand mode.

The first thing you should check is to see what settings there might be in your laptop's BIOS/UEFI. You would want it to be "hybrid", "switchable" or something like that. Given you are able to see the screen when the nvidia driver is not installed, it is probably set properly.

Here are the results when you can see the laptop screen.

There are currently some issues with the nvidia-prime-applet working properly, but it is not affecting all systems the same way. There is a fix that is working for most people, but we'd want to get an idea of what you are seeing before recommending any changes.
Antaerion wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 3:47 pm OK, I went through and updated the kernel and installed the Mint 20.1 update, and ran the following command, and currently all of the monitors are working.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
Which is a way to remove files you should not remove when you have a dual-graphics laptop. That removes the nvidia-prime-applet which is Linux Mint code and not Nvidia code.

I'm not sure where things stand with your install since you seem to be avoiding the normal method of installing Nvidia drivers by using Driver Manager. To reinstall the applet, run sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime-applet then let us know if you see the applet. If not, your system is probably affected by the bugs and we can try a known workaround.

Man, OK, that is interesting. After running the command you indicated,

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime-applet
, if I plug in my big monitor on its own, my laptop display and the big one work just fine. But if I then plug in the second external monitor, the big one goes black and I can only see the second one and the laptop one...

Re: Plugged in second external monitor, can't detect laptop monitor anymore

Post by Antaerion »

I guess what I am struggling with is, OK. I know that it has Intel and Nvidia graphics. And not all laptops have all ports wired to all graphics cards. OK. Windows can drive the laptop monitor and both external monitors. Is Linux not capable of this, potentially? And how would I even check to find out what is wired to what?

Also, considering that the laptop is able to do 144Hrz with v-Sync on the laptop monitor, I would think that it most certainly is wired to the Nvidia card, no? And right now, using the Nvidia drivers, I am able to use the two external monitors so... ?

Supplemental note, the BIOS is super basic. I couldn't even find anything in it regarding the graphics card, let alone hybrid or switchable. It was rather curious. Hell, I remember seeing more complex BIOS setups back in the late 90s... Though it did have a ton of security options.

The last data you posted indicated the nvidia driver was installed. How did it get uninstalled? It would benefit you and those helping you if you would follow the directions given and let us know if you are making changes in addition to what we've recommended. It's difficult to help you if you keep moving the goal posts.

I asked you to install the nvidia-prime-applet and then tell us if you could see it. Installing the applet should have had no effect on what you were seeing unless you made other changes in addition to installing the applet. Were you able to see the applet after installing it?

I specifically gave you only a few instructions because of your original statement:
Antaerion wrote: Wed Apr 21, 2021 12:19 amFirst, I apologize. I am not the best with the command prompt and am a bit befuddled as to what just happened.
which indicated you did something you should not have done because there's no reason for you to be in the command line to get the drivers set up properly.

I did not want to be giving instructions for correcting a problem that I was not sure your laptop was having. Let us know whether or not you were able to see the applet after running that command.

Linux is capable of doing this, BUT you have to follow instructions specifically for Intel/Nvidia laptops and not just follow any instructions you find online for Nvidia. Many of the instructions you find online for Nvidia assume only Nvidia is there and following those instructions can shut out the ability to use dual graphics.

The trend nowadays seems to be making less options available.

Hopefully, this is your current system info and you have not changed it yet again. This is the same info you posted earlier, which indicates the Nvidia driver is installed. Is it installed or did you make yet another change?

The drivers for your card are available in Driver Manager. Some people use this repo and it's usually reliable. Did you just add it or were you using it. I'm just trying to get an idea of what you have been doing which might affect this issue.

Use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

Please also post the output of cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Normally, this file will not exist, but given the issues you are seeing, I suspect it might be there.
