Garbled screen in Xfce; works in Cinnamon but too heavy

Post by athulmathewzzz »

I am having a really bad problem
When I install an ubuntu based linux distro (specifically xfce) including linux mint, The operating system is not letting me choose the correct resolution of my screen.
When I choose my original screen resolution in Display Settings. It is turning my screen into this:
Image
Originally My screen resolution is 1366X766. But Now I can only set my screen resolution to 1280X720
Every versions are giving me the same problem.
I am having this problem with MATE and XFCE but I don't have this problem when I am using Cinnamon
But Cinnamon is heavy for my stupid computer. I want to switch to xfce but I can't because of this problem.
I can but I also have a second monitor so it makes things more complicated. When I connect my second monitor it is not even letting me choose 1280X720. Is there any way to fix it

It is a combination of the windows manager/compositor and a bug in amdgpu. Here is a long thread with others having the same issue and what they tried 20.04 Display issues with AMD GPU (on MATE and Xfce).

This post indicates using compton (instead of the default marco) with LM20.1 MATE works.

I do not know what options you have available in Xfce, but try some of the other options to see if one will work..

In that case I would install Cinnamon --- you can't do anything with freaky graphics ...

As always with questions about hardware: post the full output of the terminal command inxi -Fxz.

There is two ways to solve this problem that I found online:
One is to run this command in command line:
xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/vblank_mode -t string -s "glx" --create
https://www.reddit.com/r/xubuntu/commen ... splay_fix/
or you can change the compositor to compton

according to what I read online it was an amd driver issue.
