Everything stretched horizontally (Solved)
We had a power outage the other day. After the power came back on,I turned computer back on (desktop running Mint 20.1 cinnamon) and everything is stretched horizontally. Desktop and web pages. As an example, if an icon is supposed to be round, it is now oval. Even web pages are not fitting the screen, I have to use the bottom scroll to see the right side of page.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you go into the BIOS/UEFI, are the graphics stretched there as well?

Re: Everything stretched horizontally
A little more info.
1. Was watching a youtube video in full screen when power went out.
2. When I started computer after power came on The wall paper was not fit to screen. It was HUGE. Also had a blank screen along along right side of screen.
3. Even my fonts seem larger than they should be.
It just seems like everything is supersized and I can't figure out how to get it back to normal.
Here is an example of what I'm talking about. This emblem is supposed to be round, but when I open it, it's oval. Everything is like this.

If you are seeing something distorted on the screen, but a screenshot shows something different, that is often a case of something happening to either your monitor or the cable to the monitor.
Hopefully, others will let us know what they are seeing in the image.

Re: Everything stretched horizontally
OK, it looks like it is something with my monitor, but I can't figure out what.
I can get it to appear correctly ,(not stretched), but it is only taking up part of my screen. In other words, I have a large black border on both sides. (Vertical is fine). I will try to get a picture with my phone later to show what I'm talking about.

Are you making the adjustments with buttons on the monitor or are you making changes in the Displays app?smokeymtn_ron wrote: ⤴Mon May 10, 2021 5:36 pmI can get it to appear correctly ,(not stretched), but it is only taking up part of my screen. Re: Everything stretched horizontally
You are in the above showing a resolution of 1024x768 which is these days very low and which is moreover a 4:3 aspect ratio. If your monitor is in fact e.g. 1920x1080, i.e., 16:9, then certainly it makes sense that a 1024x768 picture when stretched to fit 1920x1080 pixels by the monitor would be vertically compressed / horizontally stretched or have left/right sidebars when not stretched.
I suppose the first thing to do is have you go into your monitor properties and see how your monitor's resolution is detected. I expect it shows as a "generic" monitor with 1024x768 as in fact the best available resolution meaning you couldn't change it there; that would indicate something being amiss with the videocard receiving the monitor DDC data.
Yes, possibly through cable, but either side of said cable (monitor and videocard) could also be to blame. The history with this being post a power failure seems to hint at something more electrical than cable --- but be sure to shut down the system and reseat the cable at both ends and/or if possible try a different cable. Fully shutdown preferably in fact, i.e., remove the power cord after shutting down from both computer and monitor. Things may have reset themselves when you then after a few minutes plug in and turn on again. If not, mmm, seems you may have a bit of hardware damage...

What does the output of
xrandr --verbose
show? That will give us an initial view of what mint thinks about the monitor. But from what I've read it does sound more hardware than software.Thinkcentre M720Q - LM21.3 cinnamon, 4 x T430 - LM21.3 cinnamon, Homebrew desktop i5-8400+GTX1080 Cinnamon 19.0
Re: Everything stretched horizontally
Unfortunate. Yes, the by Andy requested xrandr output is good to see but perhaps also just go into Preferences -> Display and see if indeed your monitor is detected as some "generic" one and does not allow manual resolution setting. The display is indeed as expected for having a 16:9 monitor display a 4:3 image.smokeymtn_ron wrote: ⤴Mon May 10, 2021 9:51 pm Well disconnected everything...Waited 15 minutes, plugged everything back in...Same problem.
How possible it is depends on what hardware you have available but you'd next start eliminating culprits by different cable, different monitor, different videocard. If for some reason it turns out that e.g. the DDC chip/data in your monitor is fried it's "sort of" possible to fake things up for Linux in a software manner but that's more a hack than anything else, so if things work immediately fine again with another monitor I'd myself treat the existing one as having kicked the bucket...

Re: Everything stretched horizontally
Highest resolution showing is 1024x768. My best guess is that it is not reading the EDID from the monitor for some reason.
Have a look here:
viewtopic.php?p=2014192#p2014192
Try and get the EDID following the steps outlined, see if it provides a higher resolution. Still think it is a hardware problem.

From the link you provided:
Does this mean it can't find my monitor? Also I found out from the monitor manual, the native resolution is 1366 X 768 60Hz. Is there any way to add this resolution? We are looking for the i2c bus the monitor is on. In my case there are two monitors on buses 3 and 4. 3 is my laptop screen, 4 is my external LG ultrawide.

I am ALMOST a happy camper now. (Yes it wasn't the right native resolution).

Only one problem left:
If you open the link above, everything worked OK until I got to this last part.

I do not have a /etc/gdm and my 72 year old brain can't figure out where to put or how to set up the script they're talking about. This is the final command which will change the resolution of your unknown display. These commands will just make temporary changes until the system is rebooted. After that the changes will be gone, so we need to add this to the startup default parameters.
You can either make a bash or python script and initialize it to run at the start. Or add these commands to /etc/gdm/init this file. In my case it was gdm3 instead of just gdm. To edit the file simply type:
