[SOLVED] Intel G31 Chipset not working Mint 20.1

Post by tuxyminty »

Hi,

I have been struggling to configure Intel Graphics on my G31 chipset. It always uses fbdev and I get 1024x768 resolution in software rendering.

Below is the output which might help in helping me out to configure this stuff.

Code: Select all

Hi, tuxyminty.

Could log in to your LM 20.1 Mate as yourself, not as root, and run the command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
and share its output, please?
Some graphical details may be incorrectly reported by inxi, if run as root. - Thanks.

Karl
P.S.:
Moved the thread from "Mate" to hardware support, because it is not a Mate DE problem, but insufficient hardware suport (solveable hopefully)

Hi, tuxyminty.

Apparently, there are 2 issues, which affect your graphics chip and not identifying the right driver software:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Intel 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics vendor: Gigabyte driver: N/A bus ID: 00:02.0
           chip ID: 8086:29c2
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: fbdev,intel unloaded: modesetting,vesa compositor: marco v: 1.24.0
           resolution: 1024x768~76Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0 128 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes
First, the worst one is that the kernel seems to fail to identify your graphics chip and does not load a kernel driver for it at all. Very bad. :(
Device-1: Intel 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics vendor: Gigabyte driver: N/A

Second, and this will be related to the missing kernel driver, the X.Org environment loads 2 drivers, fbdev and intel. intel would very likely be right. But fbdev (frame buffer device) is an obsolete fallback driver, which does not support hardware acceleration and which prevents X.Org from using your graphics chip in the best possible way.
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: fbdev,intel

Off-hand I cannot offer a solution. - But let's see whether our nosy friend Google can come up with some useful threads or articles, here in the forum, in the Ubuntu forum or on Askubuntu.com. - You cannot be the only one having the Intel 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics chip.

Best regards,
Karl

Hello,tuxyminty,

1.) As no kernel driver has been loaded for your Intel graphics chip - i1915 should have been loaded - let me ask you:
Do you boot with "nomodeset" parameter?
In case you do, what heppens if you boot without the "nomodeset" parameter?

2.) Could you post the content of the file /etc/default/grub, please?

Thanks for the help. I do not use nomodeset. But tried various things from net in /etc/default/grub too. Below are the contents of my /etc/default/grub file.

Code: Select all

root@SAI:/etc/default# cat grub
# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
# info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vmalloc=256M"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i915.alpha_support=1"

# Uncomment to enable BadRAM filtering, modify to suit your needs
# This works with Linux (no patch required) and with any kernel that obtains
# the memory map information from GRUB (GNU Mach, kernel of FreeBSD ...)
#GRUB_BADRAM="0x01234567,0xfefefefe,0x89abcdef,0xefefefef"

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

# Uncomment if you don't want GRUB to pass "root=UUID=xxx" parameter to Linux
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

# Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entries
#GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"

# Uncomment to get a beep at grub start
#GRUB_INIT_TUNE="480 440 1"
root@SAI:/etc/default#

I have added vmalloc=256M and i915.alpha_support=1 part in this file. Rest all is default. But nothing seems to work unfortunately.

But lsmod shows i915 ? But its not been used by X. I had posted my lsmod command output in the first post.

Hm. As I understand the kernel parameter in /etc/default/grub, i915.alpha_support=1, is a workaround needed by specific very new Intel CPU's.
Your machine seems to be at the opposite end of "new". 2009 is more what I would call old.
You have executed sudo update-grub after adding the parameter to the grub file in order to make Grub aware of the adition?

by the way, vmalloc=256M is not enabled, because the whole line is commented out.

Writely said. I was trying all the options. Though I new its for new Intel CPU with hope I tried.

Yes. I did.

Yes. I commented that out and ran update-grub. All R&D stuff. Trail and Error without success unfortunatly. Windows 7 detects everything perfectly and gives 1366x768 too. But I do not want windows. Since this is very old chipset it must be working in some versions of Linux earlier. I had used OpenSuSE earlier which was working. Even Ubuntu-mate I tried it worked for few days and then suddenly this problem started. Since then its a struggle.

Only change I did was replace CMOS battery as it was not working. Nothing else changed. Now even with Ubuntu Mate 20.04 the same above story as mint.

I have got both mint and ubuntu installed but no success anywhere.

There should be no need to configure it. It should work automatically since the driver for it is included in the kernel.

Please boot to a live session of Mint using your install usb/dvd and give out the output of inxi -SMCGx. We want to make sure the driver is installing properly from the install media. I've seen cases where it was not and when the person downloaded a copy of Mint from a different mirror that the system worked properly.

I did some checking on this forum and others with LM20 were able to get the proper i915 driver for that card, so something either in your install or in the changes you have made since then is causing a problem.

By the way, you have an extremely tiny Mint install. We would not normally recommend that it be that small.

Also, that seems like a very high temperature for that cpu.

There is no driver installing with the live session either. That seems to indicate something there might be something wrong with the image or maybe with the hardware.

I am not sure what you mean by selecting packages. My earlier comment was about selecting a different mirror site in order to down a new version of the ISO.

Thanks for your revert.

Though I have not verified ISO image, I had downloaded from official mint mirror. Also I have tried multiple flavours Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu Mate 20.04, Ubuntu Mate 19, OpenSuSe Leap 15.2. But unfortunatly all ended in the same issue. So I feel this has nothing to do with ISO image. Still if you have got any link where this issue is resolved pls share the same. I will download ISO from there and do a fresh install of Mint.

Since you said the installation size is very less, I said I have installed using default options only the partition part I have selected on my own. So nothing custom I have done.

Thing can happen during a download. That is why we recommend verifying.

If all of those have a problem, then it is possible your computer has a hardware problem.

I do not understand what you mean by me having a link where the issue is resolved. There should not be an issue. I can provide several links of people with the same graphics where the driver loaded properly without taking any special action to make it happen.
Here is one for LM20.1 where the graphics is

Code: Select all

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel G33 v: 1.4 Mesa 20.2.6 direct render: Yes
And here is one for LM19.2

Code: Select all

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics
vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
  chip ID: 8086:29c2

I do not know how much free space you had on your drive. It is possible that is all the free space that was left. You are the one who told the installer where to install Mint, so you are the one who decided on the size of the Mint installation.

Hi,

Since all the distros were giving the same issue, I thought that the issue is not with the Intel driver. The driver is anyway loading i915. So checked my Monitor's settings. There is setting called Horizontal Position and Vertical Position which was not showing 100%. I made it 100% and save the monitor settings. Then restarted the desktop. Voila. Everything was perfect. I booted into Mint Cinnanom 20.0 which I installed yesterday. Got 1366x768 with intel driver. Then booted Ubuntu Mate 20.04. That too worked perfectly. Was very happy yesterday that it started working and it was due to some monitor settings may be distrurbed by my kids.

But again today morning when I started it is back to the same. 1024x768 with software rendering. The above settings are auto adjusted as per the screen displayed hence it was not 100%. But somehow it worked yeterday. But today again the same issue. Nothing gives me the yesterday's resolution with intel properly. My monitor is very old HCL TFT LCD 18.4".

The Product Nmae : HCMELWBN11
Model No : PW185H

Can anybody with above monitor guide me what I need to do to get maximum resolution ?

Here are few attachments :

1. Display properties when yesterday things worked well when proper EDID of monitor was read and intel driver used.

2. My HCL 18.5" TFT LCD monitor details

3. Output of Vbeinfo from grub showing preferred resolution as 1366x768 which I at present again do not get. I got it only yesterday night. Back to software rendering and 1024x768 resolution with Monitor not detected.

The data you posted for us to see does not show the i915 driver loading. It is showing N/A.

Did you check to see if the i915 driver loaded? It may be that sometimes the driver is loading and sometimes it is not.

If the i915 driver does not load, then the system can only do software rendering and thus the monitor will not display correctly.

Did you do something different that the Intel driver was used? Or was it just by luck that it happened to load?

Please focus on whether or not the i915 driver loads. You can check that by running inxi -Gx. One only does troubleshooting and work with the monitor AFTER the graphics driver is loaded. Loading the graphics driver must happen first.

The next time the driver does not load, please run the following in a terminal:
journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply. It prints the log information from the current boot cycle and sends it to termbin. Hopefully, there will be some indications of why the i915 driver is not loading.

Thanks SMG tor the revert. I in fact checked and intel driver was loading plus monitor was also detected properly and i was getting 1366x768 resolution. That happened only during yesterday night.

Its very late night here in India. Will post the output of your command tomorrow morning.

Still puzzled how intel driver loads sometimes and then back to fbdev😔

Try this method to load the Intel kernel module earlier in the boot process. Use this command to open the modules file: xed admin:///etc/modules

Add this at the bottom: i915

If that doesn’t work, then try removing the fbdev driver: sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-video-fbdev

Log out and back in. If there is a problem, then re-install that driver: apt install xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
