External Monitor no longer detected after power failure.

Post by husingillchild »

Hi all,

I have a second monitor that I connect to my dual boot Lenovo laptop. I have had this laptop running in roughly this configuration for the better part of a year and never had a problem. Yesterday everything was working, I disconnected my laptop from it's doc to use it in the living room and it ran out of power before I managed to get it to a wall socket. This morning the system is not detecting the screen. I have checked the Windows partition and it has no issue. I have briefly looked at posts relating to this but most of those seem to be from install and do no address this situation.

I have run the apt updates and all that. My understanding is that everything was configured correctly, but I am out of ideas...

Any help would be great!

I am not sure what you mean by the apt updates. The current 5.4 kernel is 5.4.0-74. Have you checked Update Manager to make sure you have all the latest updates?

System:
Kernel: 5.4.0-42-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0
Desktop: Cinnamon 4.6.7 wm: muffin 4.6.3 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 20 Ulyana base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal

With a 10th gen Intel processor, I would recommend using the 5.8 kernel which is available in Update Manager. That will also give you an updated i915 driver for the Intel graphics on your laptop.

To install the 5.8 kernel, open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Do you know if your system was always using the Intel driver? Your system has two GPUs and with Mint this combination I would expect it to normally use Intel, but I do not know if that was what you used before the problem arose. You might want to check your computer's BIOS/UEFI to see if there is an option to set which GPU is used.
