[Solved] Ti1060 Max3Q laptop, gfx driver assistance

Post by Steensen »

Hi.
After having good experiences using 19.3 and steam playing Civilizations 6 on my laptop, but still having small problems with various things, i chose to upgrade my kernel and distro to 20, but then the sh*t hit the fan, and a lot of trouble with my GFX and unable to even play a MKV through VLS player without it studdering.

Any suggestion how to get my laptop with its main GFX to perform to the max again in Civ. 6?

The inxi sees my GFX as a GTX1070, but it is a Ti1060 Max3Q laptop GFX.

I have tried using the un-install code for the nVidia driver, and installed 390, 440, 460 and 465 in stead, but all resulting in the nVidia X-server crashing/unusable.
390 gives me somewhat usable Graphix in civ6, but nothing near what I had with the 19.3 where I could have everything on ultra and still not have any trouble running my game at 4K resolution (3840x2160) through HDMI and at same time having my laptop screen (1920x1080) run a mkv movie.

I'm currently at work as a sailor, so I have good network when in port, but at sea it is mediocre, so I might be a few days between checking the tread.

thx in advance.

The data you posted indicates Intel is rendering the graphics. Nvidia is currently shut off. Is that what you have been using?

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK driver: i915
v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:3e9b
Device-2: NVIDIA GP104M [GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile] vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK

Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~120Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6
direct render: Yes

Can you see the nvidia-prime-applet in the panel?
Steensen wrote: Sat Jun 12, 2021 2:44 pmI have tried using the un-install code for the nVidia driver,
What does that mean? Your system has dual graphics, so you may need to reinstall some files if you use wildcard symbols to remove nvidia files.

Hi SMG.
Thx for your time. Sory for late reply, but as mentioned in initial post, I'm a sailor, so long periods without internet for laptops.

Can see my memory have played me around. My GFX is a Ti 1060 Max 3Q (laptop equivalent of Ti 1070, thus the mint sees my GFX as a 1070). Sorry for the confusion.

After installing 20.1, then my nVidia GPU is loaded, but not utilized proper. intel GFX can hardly run Civ6 in 1080P, so i'm fairly confident it where nVidia running when testing Civ6.

My nvidia X server is not usable. It just opens with a small window and having the cross for closing it, help botton and finish botton.

What does that mean? Your system has dual graphics, so you may need to reinstall some files if you use wildcard symbols to remove nvidia files.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-driver-*
or

Code: Select all

apt purge *nvidia*
Afterwards I installed various versions, using a cleaner, rebooted in between, all unsuccessfull.

Just did it whilst typing this post, and 390 where the one installed/removed, and now I try 460.84.
Will post result afterwards.

Edit: No difference, nvidia X server still no good, and horrible GFX performance.

That is usually an indication not all the Nvidia files loaded. While you may have installed the files, they need to load at boot time and load in the correct order so they get priority.
Steensen wrote: Sat Jun 19, 2021 6:42 am

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-driver-*
or

Code: Select all

apt purge *nvidia*
The latter will remove the nvidia-prime and nvidia-prime-applet files which are Mint files. You would need to reinstall those in addition to installing the Nvidia driver files.
Steensen wrote: Sat Jun 19, 2021 6:42 am Afterwards I installed various versions, using a cleaner, rebooted in between, all unsuccessfull.
I have no idea what a cleaner might do. We do not recommend using cleaners.

Have you even determined if the Nvidia driver is being used?

There is a difference with regards to troubleshooting if you have horrible GFX performance because Intel is being used instead of Nvidia or if you have horrible GFX performance and Nvidia is being used.

This output looks the same as what you posted earlier. It appears to me that your system is only using Intel. There are no nvidia driver showing as loaded. (Keep in mind that loaded is different from installed.)

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK driver: i915
v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:3e9b
Device-2: NVIDIA GP104M [GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile] vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK
driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:1ba1
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~120Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6
direct render: Yes

When the Nvidia driver is loaded, the graphics output for On-Demand mode should like something like:
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK driver: i915
v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:3e9b
Device-2: NVIDIA GP104M [GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile] vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK
driver: nvidia 460.xx bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:1ba1
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting, nvidia unloaded: fbdev, vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~120Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6
direct render: Yes

When running in Nvidia Performance mode the renderer would be Nvidia with the rest the same as On-Demand mode.

I point that out to let you know if you load a different Nvidia driver number, but the inxi output does not change to show nvidia drivers, then you are using Intel and loading another Nvidia driver will not help. There appears to be something which is preventing Nvidia from loading during the boot cycle (even though the Nvidia files are installed).

I will make another post with some suggestions (since this post is getting long).

To check to see if nvidia files are installed, you can run dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia. In a proper installation, there are approximately 20-25 files with nvidia-driver#xxx in their name.

You may know this from LM19, but Secure Boot can block Nvidia files from loading even though they are installed. You can run mokutil --sb-state to see if Secure Boot is enabled.

If the nvidia files are there and Secure Boot is disabled, there may be an issue with the nvidia-prime files. There was a bug earlier in the year (which I thought had been corrected by now), with the nvidia-prime files. The fourth post in this thread Disappearing Nvidia drivers :Prime the prime suspect? describes a one line code fix (editing line 34) for a know bug with some of the graphics files related to Nvidia. It is possible that may be preventing your system from switching to Nvidia.

The output you have posted reminds me of output others posted when that issue (bug) was happening, so it is possible that might be the issue.
Steensen wrote: Sat Jun 19, 2021 6:42 amI observed a different post with GFX trouble, talking about kernel 53 is the trouble, have anyone any input on that?
I have not heard of issues with the -53 kernel. My system is showing the latest available kernel is 5.8.0-55.

I can not comment about the post you reference because I do not know what it is. If you provide a link, I will take a look at it.

I am aware that many people are having issues with the latest Nvidia drivers and getting those to load faster as described in this post [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration") has fixed issues. While that may not fix the specific issue you are experiencing, it may help (and will not hurt) to do it.

Hi again SMG.
Thx for your effort.
Maybe you are right, that it's the intel running/in use, not the nvidia. I might be wrong remembering how horrible it performs....
The issue have been there from day 1 I upgraded from 19.3 to 20.1 (both cinamon 64-bit).
Long story short, it may be that intel where "in service" before upgrading, and after upgrade it is set for same GFX as last use, and this was intel.

So lets agree to change perspective, as you suggest, and then we say device 1 (intel) is active and device 2 (nvidia) is passive, due to this line in the inxi:

Code: Select all

Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: mode setting unloaded: fbdev, vesa
  resolution: 1920x1080~120Hz
regarding "cleaner", the two codes from my last post have been used alternating (apt get remove or apt purge).

SMG wrote: Sat Jun 19, 2021 2:25 pm You may know this from LM19, but Secure Boot can block Nvidia files from loading even though they are installed. You can run mokutil --sb-state to see if Secure Boot is enabled.

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disabled
Did not know, but I have not used secure boot since back in 16.x to fix my bootgrub, and then it where disabled again, and your code line says disabled as expected.
SMG wrote: Sat Jun 19, 2021 2:25 pm If the nvidia files are there and Secure Boot is disabled, there may be an issue with the nvidia-prime files.

Fair enough. Multiple days since i read it, cannot remember what post it where mentioned in.
I'll have a look at that post.
Edit:
When running that XED command, this is the text in terminal:

Code: Select all

** (xed:3866): WARNING **: 21:42:09.767: Den angivne placering er ikke monteret
"The mentioned place is not mounted"
When I get to the file after entering my code, the three lines are already entered in the early boot list. (copy paste from file):

Code: Select all

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.
nvidia
nvidia-drm
nvidia-modeset
so that issue is not the reason for my trouble.
For what I see, my trouble is that I cannot change between intel and nvidia device, and (so far) not the GFX driver being the main issue...
/Edit.

I'll have a look at that post as well.

I have internet right now, but I'm at out at a wind turbine farm as I type, so IDK if my internet will stay strong.

I have read that thread and the thread he have created, but it is way too tricky for my limmited skills to keep track of what to do and not to do.
at the end of his thread, it seems they have solved the issue (partially) with a version 1.2.7
My skill set in linux mint is not that great yet, so I need "a grown up" to give me more point for point guide in what/how to upgrade, in stead of just upgrading everything blindly. :?
Is it possible for you SMG (or someone else) to give me such assistance or at least summarize for me how and what to do?
thx in advance.

Long story short, it may be that intel where "in service" before upgrading, and after upgrade it is set for same GFX as last use, and this was intel.
I presume you updated from LM19.3 to LM20 and then from LM20 to LM20.1 as that is the recommended path.

I would think if Intel was rendering before you updated then it would still be rendering after the update. I am not aware of anything in the upgrade which would change that.
Steensen wrote: Sat Jun 19, 2021 3:25 pmregarding "cleaner", the two codes from my last post have been used alternating (apt get remove or apt purge).
That would be okay. I thought you meant a specific software cleaner product.

Your system is missing the nvidia-prime-applet. You can reinstall it with sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime-applet.

So we will consider that issue to be done.

I'll address your last question in the next post.

I went to the update tool, searched for new releases, updated, rebooted, updated...... till no more updates.
That where about some time in Febuary 2021.

It is my understanding that several files has to be updated to fix the bug, but I thought they all were. One was the nvidia-prime-applet, but there were some other files as well.

First step: Check to make sure Update Manager is showing that you have all the updates.

I have started the upgrade mannager, but have about 300MB on a 5Mbit connection shared between 35 people, its going to take some time.
The nVidia aplet have been updated, but still troubles as posted with pic in my last post.

Thx for your time and kind assistance.

The way the switchable graphics (Intel and Nvidia) is currently working is when Intel is rendering, Nvidia is not loaded. (It is my understanding that helps with power savings on the laptop's battery.) When Nvidia is not loaded, then you will get the empty box.

However, you should be able to see the nvidia-prime-applet in your panel, and be able to use the applet to switch to On-Demand mode or Nvidia Performance Mode and reboot and then have the Nvidia modules load so it can be used.

Do you see the nvidia-prime-applet in your panel? (It will probably be the Intel logo because Intel is rendering.)

If you see it, does it let you switch modes?

Edited to add: There is an image of the nvidia-prime-applet (Intel) in New features in Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon in the Nvidia Optimus section.

So far so good.

But then again, it have greyed out "mesa intel", so is it using both GPU's now?

Just tested Civ6 benchmark, and got a totally ghosting scenario with all on ultra/max, where it normally plays smooth in 19.3 @ 4k resolution, but this where only with my laptops 1920x1080 screen.
Memory wise and CPU wise was "normal" according to system survailance curves.

I tried clicking "nVidia on demand", say yes, enter my password, and then the selection window is still active on the window for 15 seconds, with yes highlighted, but suddenly disapears.
I'll post this now, log out/log in of mint, and see if that changes anything on GPU performance.

Have testete a few setups, but common for all, not satisfying performance.

Intel-energy saving - logout - log in
with MSAA 8x and rest to minimum, 9.6-10.7 FPS.
MSAA off, all to minimum, 10.5-12.4 FPS

nVidia - performance mode, - logout - log in
MSAA off, all to minimum, 12.7-14.9 FPS

Intel-energy saving - logout - log in
Same results as last test with intel

nVidia - performance mode, reboot - log in
MSAA off, all to minimum, 35-55 FPS
MSAA off, all to maximum, 25-45 FPS
MSAA 8x, Alll to maximum, 22-46 FPS

According to PCgamer, Ti1060 should do 70-100fps at 1080P depending on details. Thus my GFX should be in the 100+, so that confirms my thought that either intel is still running, even though applet says nVidia logo and performance mode, or driver is crap for nVidia.

So that could sugest/point to 460 driver being bull. So now I have to downgrade driver to 450 or even 390 I would guess.
What is your input to that SMG?

That "Mesa Intel" is also greyed out on the screenshot on the New Features Page. I am not sure what it might signify that it is there but greyed out, but the information you show in your two most recent posts indicate Nvidia is loaded and rendering the graphics. The Intel display driver (modesetting) is loaded, but it is not rendering (that is normal).
Steensen wrote: Sun Jun 20, 2021 4:22 amI tried clicking "nVidia on demand",
The On-demand mode is more of a power-savings feature. It mainly uses Intel to render, but it can also use Nvidia.

In Nvidia mode, all programs will use Nvidia even if the extra processing power of Nvidia is not needed. In Intel mode, all programs will use Intel even if performance is weak.

Now that it appears all files are on your system and you are able to switch back and forth between Intel and Nvidia, I would think the next step would be to see if there might have been changes between LM19 and LM20 that might cause Steam/Civilization 6 to run differently or need to use different settings. Maybe that is why there is a difference? I'll see what I can find.

I would not think there would be that much of a difference in the Nvidia drivers between what you were using in LM19 and now in LM20, but you could also check (while in Nvidia mode) if there is anything different you can see in the Nvidia X Server settings options which might be a factor.

I am still not able, in neither of the 3 modes, to enter in to nVidia settings. It comes up with the small blank window I posted screenshot of in an earlier post.
Edit: Now I am able for the first time, to enter the settings, when in performance mode, as soon as I have posted thist about not being able....

[Solved] Ti1060 Max3Q laptop, gfx driver assistance

Post by Steensen »

I just tried playing for a few minutes on a old save game, and it seems to run smoothly on my laptop with all graphics settings to maximum.
Had the driver overlay with FPS, and it went between 35 and 95FPS, so I suppose the various small updates have had a small impact on the game, but this is usable and acceptable.

Bottom line, the GFX driver issue seems to be fixed.

Summarizing what have been done:
-Confirm safe boot have been disabled

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
-Ordinary update through update manager

-Manually installed 460 driver

Code: Select all

apt install nvidia-driver-460
-Manually installed nVidia Prime Applet

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-prime-applet
Rebooted a few times in between various updates, and use reboot in stead of log-out/log-in bethod when changing between energy saving mode and performance mode.

Remember, nVidia settings (nVidia X-server) only accessable when nVidia card is loaded, in my case, when in performance mode.

Huge thx. to SMG for assistance.

Glad to hear it is working better. The info I was finding ProtonDB: Sid Meier’s Civilization VI didn't seem to have a theme on what might work best other than running it natively rather than on Proton which I believe you were already doing.

Thanks for summarizing what was done as that will help others.

Safe travels and happy gaming to you. :)
