Cannot boot with Nvidia driver and USB-C or DP

Post by Hypersphere »

Recently, I found that I could not boot with Linux Mint 20.1 64-bit Xfce and the most recent Nvidia drivers, e.g., anything newer than 460.73.02, when the computer was connected to a monitor with either USB-C or DP. If connected with HDMI, there was no problem.

Other symptoms reported that involve the Nvidia driver bug include freezing of the mouse and keyboard and/or garbled text and/or images on the screen.

After a very frustrating several days of troubleshooting software and hardware, I finally discovered that rolling back the Nvidia driver to 460.73.01 provided a workaround -- this older driver enabled the system to boot, regardless of which video connector was being used.

According to recent posts on the Nvidia forums, the most recent beta driver, 470.42.01, also fixes the problem. However, there are also warnings that beta video drivers should not be used on production systems.

If others are encountering issues with not being able to boot with Nvidia drivers newer than 460.73.02, you should be able to remedy the situation by rolling back your Nvidia driver, or, at your own risk, upgrading to the beta driver.
