Mint 20.2 kernel 5.4.0-80 Suspend doesn't work

Post by dintier »

Hello,

I'm running Mint 20.2 with kernel 5.4.0-80. When I click "Suspend", it puts me back to the login screen. When I enter my password, I then get a black screen. To get out of it, I use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get another console, login, and reboot.

If it goes to suspend from inactivity, then the same thing happens: black screen.

I have tried with nouveau and the nvidia drivers (460 and 470). The computer doesn't use UEFI.

How can I get suspend to work on that machine?

Hello, dentier.

Has suspending worked using the pevious kernel, K5.4.0-77 very likely or yet an older K5.4.0-xx kernel?
I.e. has it worked ever before?

Looking at your inxi output and how new your machine seems to be

Code: Select all

Machine: Type: Desktop System: LENOVO product: 30C7000CMZ v: ThinkStation P330 serial: <filter> Chassis: type: 3
           serial: <filter>
           Mobo: LENOVO model: 3138 v: SDK0Q40112 WIN 3305669164016 serial: <filter> UEFI [Legacy]: LENOVO v: M1VKT65A
           date: 03/03/2021
I seriously tend to advise changing to a higher (=newer) kernel series, K5.8.0-xx or K5.11.0-xx. Very likely they support your hardware better than the somewhat dated LTS kernel series 5.4.0-xx.

You should be able to change to a new kernel series with the help of Update Manager. View => Linux kernels.

Karl

I have tried with nouveau and the nvidia drivers (460 and 470). The computer doesn't use UEFI.
That could be the issue, suspend doesn't work for me on nvidia drivers higher than 450.

Do you have option to install an earlier driver >= 450?

Hi,

I have just started using this machine last week, so it has never worked for me but I haven't been using it that long.

I also tried kernels 5.8 and 5.11, the result is the same.

I'm going to try with nvidia-driver-450 and see what happens.

I've tried drivers v390 from nvidia, and this is what happens:

I choose "Suspend" from the mint menu
I'm taken to the logon screen
I enter my password
I get a black (but monitors on) screen
The only way out is to open another console with Ctrl-Alt-F2 and `sudo reboot`.

The computer never actually suspends, and can never come back from that broken state.
