I'm using Linux Mint 20.1 and recently had to replace my elderly graphics card. I'm not a gamer so I went for an NVIDIA GeForce GT 710, which I installed and have struggled to get my system to use it..
Here's the output from the command below
chris@chris-hp-workstation-xw6200:~$ lspci -k | grep -A 2 -i "VGA"
40:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 710] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] GK208B [GeForce GT 710]
Kernel driver in use: nvidia
chris@chris-hp-workstation-xw6200:~$
This seems to say that all is OK but when I start the PC I get a message saying that I am not using graphics hardware acceleration and will have poor performance. It is correct, I get terrible results can't play the simplest of videos (which worked fine on my old card)..
If I take the option to run Driver Manager and select the NVIDIA recommended driver of NVIDIA-DRIVER-470 it just runs and runs for ages with no result
Am I doing something wrong ???

Re: Nvidia GeForce GT 710
When you get that message, restart X Server with Ctl-Alt-Backspace. If that corrects the issue, a more permanent solution is in this post [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let us know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.
Perhaps there is an issue with the server on the other end? I do not know. I would just recommend trying on a different day.
Often, when the newer driver is available, there is an update which comes through Update Manager which will update your current driver to the new version. It may be that the update version is not yet available. The Nvidia-470 driver just came out a few days ago.
Edited to fix typo.

Re: Nvidia GeForce GT 710
Thanks for the swift response, restarting with CRTL-ALT-BACKSPACE has no effect, still the same. I will try the second solution tomorrow and report back.
Re: Nvidia GeForce GT 710
If Ctl-Alt-Backspace does not fix the issue, then I would not expect the fix roblm recommends to work.
You should not need a newer driver for the hardware acceleration to work. There may be something else not quite correct. What is the output of
inxi -Fxxxrz
and dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

Re: Nvidia GeForce GT 710
When the Nvidia device driver loads, but the nouveau display driver does instead of the nvidia like it did below, that is often and indication the fix to get the nvidia modules to load sooner (the fix recommended by roblm) will work.

Just posting that info so when other come across this thread they could know to check for that. Glad to hear your system is now working as desired.
