New Mint Cinnamon install, flickering mouse choppy screen

Post by erik530195 »

To make a long story short, I've been led to this forum because everyone on other sites has run out of ideas. Up to this point I've completely reinstalled a verified ISO, updated everything, and tried a bunch of different desktop environments.

It took me hours to get a 4k primary 55" monitor working with two other smaller ones, to get the scaling and everything right. The only remaining issue with that is that the mouse starts flickering in and out after 5 mins or so, at which point I do the following:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output DP-1 --scale 0.9999x0.9999
The main issue at hand currently, regardless of whether I fix the mouse or not, is that the entire system is laggy and slow. It freezes up even while trying to type this post. Video playback whether it be youtube or an application is abysmal, regardless of resolution. I really like Cinnamon as I just switched from windows, and since the issues are present on other desktop environments I have to assume it's a hardware or driver issue. I have another Nuc with a celeron chip that has been beautiful with Mint, and plays youtube all day long. (This makes me hesitate to believe it's an intel issue)

Code: Select all

Welcome to the forum, erik530195.

Have you tried a newer kernel? The 5.11 is available in Update Manager and I expect it will be a better match for your 8th-gen Intel especially given the multiple larger monitors.

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
