[ALTERNATE SOLUTION] Mint 20.2 , both GPUs drivers not loading, black screen

Post by hetnet »

Hello All,

I have made the fresh installation of Mint 20.2 Cinnamon 64bit on HP Pavilion 15-eg0079nw equipped with both:
  • Intel TigerLake GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] chip ID: 8086:9a49
  • NVIDIA TU117M [GeForce MX450] chip ID: 10de:1f97
Trying to install nvidia driver ver 460 or 470 always ended with black screen after rebooting. How to enable both drivers and 3D renderer?

Welcome to the forum, hetnet.

I looked up the specs for you computer and it is listed as having an 11th-gen Intel cpu which means you should be using the 5.11 kernel which is available in Update Manager. I suspect you are using the 5.4 kernel right now because not even the Intel driver installed and that driver comes from the kernel.

Device-1: Intel vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:00:02.0
Device-2: NVIDIA vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:01:00.0
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: fbdev unloaded: modesetting,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6
direct render: Yes

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Installed v. 5.11.0-25-generic kernel as suggested. Unfortunately, after trying to install nvidia drivers v 470, 460, 390 (every time I restored system using Timeshift) I receive black screen after rebooting. CTRL+ALT +F1 key combination doesn`t work then.

At the end of nvidia v. 390 installation in terminal, I receive error:

Code: Select all

Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_49.0.1.bin for module i915
What else can be done?

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Also, can you see the nvidia-prime-applet in your panel?

I could see the nvidia-prime-applet in the panel only when installed nvidia v390 on default kernel 5.4. I could switch between intel and nvidia, but there was no hardware acceleration. When updated kernel to 5.11 and tried to install different nvidia driver version, I had no chance to boot the system (black screen).

In what you posted earlier, there were no drivers installed. It is not possible to get hardware acceleration with no drivers installed.

You should be able to update to the 5.11 kernel and get hardware acceleration with the Intel driver. However, the data you just posted indicates there are still no drivers installed even with the 5.11 kernel.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:00:02.0
chip ID: 8086:9a49
Device-2: NVIDIA vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:01:00.0
chip ID: 10de:1f97
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: fbdev unloaded: modesetting,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

That is unusual and suggests there is a problem which must be resolved before trying to solve Nvidia driver problems.

Questions which could answer why the driver did not install:
-- Did you boot normally to get the information you posted? (ie. you did not boot in Recovery Mode).
-- Did you add any kernel parameters (such as nomodeset)?

Can you boot to a live session of Mint with the Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO and inxi -Gx shows the i915 Intel driver installed? That ISO has the 5.11 kernel.

This driver may be correct for your computer, but I just want to make a note of it for those more familiar with this part of inxi in case this might be a factor. That is not a driver I'm used to seeing.

Yes, I have added nomodeset to grub config. Without that parameter it was no possible to boot (black screen).
Can you boot to a live session of Mint with the Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO and inxi -Gx shows the i915 Intel driver installed? That ISO has the 5.11 kernel.
I additionally tried with 20.2 Cinnamon "Edge" edition. There was black screen again all the time, but the system succeeded to boot (I have heard "welcome sound").

That parameter prevents the graphics drivers from installing. That is why there is N/A in your output. That is why the Nvidia drivers are not being used.

At this point, I do not know what the issue might be. It's my understanding the kernels for your Intel graphics should be in that kernel, but perhaps there is a bug or there is something else happening.

We would need to understand why the black screen comes up. The only way I know to do that is to check logs.
-- Remove nomodeset.
-- Reboot the computer. If it goes to a black screen, power off the computer.
-- Boot into Recovery Mode (boot into grub and select the Advanced options and select a kernel with (recovery mode) after it).
-- Open a terminal and run journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which you stopped with the power button) in reverse order (so the reason for the black screen should be near the top) and sends it to termbin. (Termbin deletes the info after a month.)

This journalctl was stopped well before the start-up finished. There are lines in journalctl which will specifically say how long the start-up lasted and none of those lines are in this log because the start-up was still in progress.

start = lip 27 22:46:59
end = lip 27 22:46:59

The timespan of the log is one second. I suggest waiting at least a minute or more. If you did wait that long, then please wait some more time.

The output that was there did show the i915 driver (Intel) initializing.

Code: Select all

lip 27 22:46:59 hp kernel: [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20201103 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
I saw some items related to the nouveau driver, but given the log was prematurely stopped, I do not know if they would have been an issue. Sometimes items are corrected later in the start-up process.

I did not see anything in this section of the start-up which appeared to be an issue related to graphics.

Do you have any BIOS/UEFI settings related to graphics? If so, it is set to hybrid/switchable or something similar to that? You do not want it set to discrete/Nvidia for this troubleshooting session.

Both gpus were initialized.

If you have your computer setup to use hybrid/switchable graphics, then I would think that should not be a reason for no graphics because Intel would load. I did not see any problems in the journal for Intel graphics, so my guess at this point is something is preventing it from being used which could be a BIOS/UEFI setting since you saw the same result when booting to a live session of Mint from the usb.

On your installed system, just to make sure you did not run any Nvidia programs which might prevent Intel from loading, run the following:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Because your computer has switchable graphics, it should indicate no such file or directory. If there is a file there, that would be a reason for no Intel graphics and the file should be removed.

Let us know your graphics options in BIOS/UEFI.

Unfortunately, I couldn`t find any configuration tab related to graphics in BIOS Setup Menu. I have to update BIOS from version F.11 to F.12 - probably under Windows OS, but I don`t expect any new config options to be available.

There is no such file or directory. In the meantime, I tried to boot with Ubuntu 21.04 Live USB (kernel 5.11) with no problem. I will try to install Ubuntu later - but I`m not sure if it is safe to allow installer to format first UEFI partition as ESP.

Re: Mint 20.2 , Nvidia driver not loading - No Hardware Acceleration

While the line below normally indicates it looks for modules for your kernel, the kernel listed is not one of the supported Ubuntu kernels and is not the kernel listed in your inxi output above.

Code: Select all

Looking for nvidia modules in /lib/modules/5.11.0-16-generic/updates/dkms
Might you know where you obtained that kernel?

The 5.11 kernels showing in my Update Manager start with 5.11.0-22. There is nothing older listed. There is also a 5.11.0-25 available which is what you had in your inxi output.

Code: Select all

System:
  Kernel: 5.11.0-25-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A
Desktop: Cinnamon 5.0.5 wm: muffin 5.0.1 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 20.2 Uma base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
See if the 5.11.0-16 kernel is showing as installed in Update Manager and remove it if it is.
-- View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
-- Make sure 5.11 is selected in the left pane.
-- If 5.11.0-16 is listed and has Installed in the middle column, click it for the "Remove" button to appear.
-- Remove it and reboot.

Check the output of cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log to see if that kernel version changed in the line I listed above.

User Rockman81 in this topic has the same Intel processor and Nvidia GPU in his laptop. He was able to get it to boot with the 5.8 kernel: viewtopic.php?t=346859

In that topic, LanceM says this:
The 11th Gen intel were launched in the first quarter of 2021…
However, that CPU was actually launched in the third quarter of 2020, the same time the 5.8 kernel was released:

Mint is based on Ubuntu 20.04 and not 21.04, so that explains why the kernel was unfamiliar to me..

I went back and checked older threads with this issue:

and I found a case which related to the Secure Boot setting.

I realize yours is listed as disabled, but it also indicates your system is in Platform Setup Mode. Maybe that is a factor. I did some research on "Platform Setup Mode" recently when it came up in another thread. Here is the post where the person reported it and what I found is in the very next post. What I found led me to state, "That leads me to believe the platform should not be in setup mode. ". However, Secure Boot settings seem to be handled differently by each manufacturer. I do not know how HP handles it and it might not be a factor in this, but that's the only idea I have at the present time.

Re: Mint 20.2 , both GPUs drivers not loading, black screen

Post by hetnet »

I managed to update BIOS to F.12 version (under Win10). Again, tried to install video drivers using new released, different distributions (OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, Fedora, Elementary OS, Ubuntu LTS and others), different kernels (including oem versions), different methods (including "hard way": installing drivers directly downloaded from nvidia website). I tried installation with Secure Boot enabled, generating and registering key in UEFI. With no success at all.

Finally, I tried install MX Linux MX-19.4.1_x64 KDE, AHS with Secure Boot disabled. The AHS (Advanced Hardware Support) iso features a debian 5.10.24 kernel, mesa 20.3 updates, as well as a new updated firmware packages. That time I was lucky ;).

First of all, the Intel video driver was loaded in fresh installation. Then I used MX Linux Nvidia installation wizard. I chose all default options and nvidia 450.80.02 ver was successfully installed. MX Linux uses Bumblebee technology for switching GPUs, and I m quite happy with that solution.

Then I installed nvidia-settings package, which can be then run:

Code: Select all

optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8
inxi -G

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Intel TigerLake GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: i915 v: kernel
          Device-2: NVIDIA TU117M [GeForce MX450] driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:01:00.0
          Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.10 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Xe Graphics (TGL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.3.4 direct render: Yes
optirun inxi -G

Code: Select all

Graphics:  Device-1: Intel TigerLake GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics] driver: i915 v: kernel
          Device-2: NVIDIA TU117M [GeForce MX450] driver: nvidia v: 450.80.02
          Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.10 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
          OpenGL: renderer: GeForce MX450/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 450.80.02
I could benchmark 3D rendering:

Code: Select all

optirun glxspheres64
On MX Linux, it was necessary to install firmware to detect sound card

Code: Select all

sudo apt install firmware-sof-signed
@SMG Thank you for helping me resolve the issue - really appreciate Your support ;) Should I mark the topic as SOLVED?
