[SOLVED] Mint Cinnamon 20.2 on Lenovo ThinkBook 14G2 ITL — HDMI not work

Post by jhaoda »

Hello. Got an new Lenovo ThinkBook 14G2 ITL with Intel i7-1165G7 and Iris Xe video adapter.

inxi:

Code: Select all

System: Kernel: 5.11.0-25-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A Desktop: Cinnamon 5.0.5 wm: muffin 5.0.1 dm: LightDM 1.30.0
Distro: Linux Mint 20.2 Uma base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
Machine: Type: Laptop System: LENOVO product: 20VD v: ThinkBook 14 G2 ITL serial: <filter> Chassis: type: 10
           v: ThinkBook 14 G2 ITL serial: <filter>
Mobo: LENOVO model: LNVNB161216 v: No DPK serial: <filter> UEFI: LENOVO v: F8CN35WW(V2.01) date: 03/03/2021
Graphics: Device-1: Intel vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 0000:00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:9a49
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Xe Graphics (TGL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6 direct render: Yes
What i tried to do:
1. Fresh install Mint 20.2 Cinnamon (try 5.4, 5.8 and 5.11 kernels) — HDMI doesn't work.
2. Fresh install Mint 20.2 Edge Cinnamon (try 5.4, 5.8 and 5.11 kernels) — HDMI doesn't work.

Ok, let's google!
3. Install Min 20.2 Edge Cinnamon and apt install linux-oem-20.04, reboot via grub to installed 5.10 kernel — HDMI doesn't work.
4. Install Min 20.2 Edge Cinnamon and apt install linux-oem-20.04b, reboot via grub to installed 5.10 kernel — HDMI doesn't work.

On the last attempts i saw in console some warnings:
possible missing firmware "/lib/firmware/i915/tgl_huc_7.5.0.bin for module i915"

Ok, google again. Found this answer, copy missing files until the update-initramfs -u -k all ran without warnings — HDMI doesn't work.

Can't test HDMI port on Windows (it is not installed due to strange VMD driver bug) and via DisplayPort (has no cable), but HDMI cable and monitor works perfectly on other laptop.

Any suggestions?

All the graphics drivers appear to be installed, so that is not the issue.
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 0000:00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:9a49
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel Xe Graphics (TGL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.2.6 direct render: Yes

I looked up ThinkBook 14 G2 ITL Product Specs and the HDMI port is listed as HDMI 1.4b, so I would not think you would need a special cable.

The fact it is not working with Mint or Windows makes me suspect there might be a hardware issue with the port.
