[Solved]Black Screen on HP EliteBook 8440p w Intel Graphics

Post by PhillyIdol »

Hey guys,

This isn't "really" a new issue post, but I know from other threads it's usually best to start a new thread when asking for assistance, so here I am.

I'm not a newb to Linux (I've been using Mint and Ubuntu for a while now), as I DO know how to fig things out, including search and try/test what I find (I've actually re-installed Mint 4x now  ), so I didn't really wanna have to post this and bother you all, as I have read multiple threads, and had 'some' success, but the reason I love Linux is the forums, so her I be :D, as I always find awesome guru's that show there's better ways of fixing issues, so here's my system story...

I have this great little HP Elitebook 8440 that I was running Ubuntu on and I really wanted to try Mint (I used Mate as I thot Cinnamon would be to much for the old box). I started with Mint 20, but ran into the black screen issue (even with the Live USB), so I went the 'try and older vers' route and...
  • 19 (same issue)
  • 18 (worked - yay)
..., so from here I thot, 'Let's see if I can upgrade to 20'.

I got to 18.3 and all was well, then ASA I upgraded to 19 - right back to the black screen (BTW I'd get the login screen no prob, but after I logged in, I'd get a few secs where I'd see the taskbar almost loading up, then lights out). I've run thru a mountain of posts and end result I was successful with adding the 'i915.modeset=0' entry, but ONLY at the bootup grub (so I didn't permanently add it, as to me (and a few guru threads have noted) that's just a 'workaround', not a fix ), sooooo...

After looking and looking I found a guru that posted this link as a possible fix for this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=345452, but it didn't wok for me. I couldn't install the kernel listed (wasn't in Synaptic and would just get 'Unable/Couldn't locate/find pkg in terminal'), so I fig'd I was prob missing a step and decide 'Why not ask in the awesome forum?' :D

As always, I'm always appreciative for any help here and thank you in advance for replies, so as is customary, here's my system specs...

P.S. After I upgraded to 19 and edited the boot grub with the 'i915' entry, I installed AnyDesk, so even tho with a reboot my screen goes to black, I can use that to remote in and I get/see the desktop, so not a bad 'workaround' tip for anyone who's trying to troubleshoot graphic issues with a black screen

By doing this, the i915 driver is unloaded because kernel mode setting is not enabled. You would have a similar outcome if you would have added nomodeset. However, in both cases it means your system is running in software rendering mode (llvmpipe) instead of using the Intel hardware.

That thread and kernel are for very new computers needing a newer kernel than what was available in LM20. You are running LM19, so that kernel would not be an option.

That also gives you an option to get the journalctl for the boot with the black screen so you can determine what might be causing the graphics driver problem. Run journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|i915" and see what comes up. That is similar to the command in the other thread except it gets the information from the current boot cycle (which is one with a black screen). Since you are seeing the login screen, that might not provide enough information, but try it as a start.

Well helloooo there guru SMG :D

As it's been yor threads that have helped me get thus far (on other things as well), it's nice to have you on this one.

Don't know if you saw my P.S. at the bottom of my post, but even tho I can't see the desktop on the laptop itself, I can remote to it and get to it thru AnyDesk. I also kinda fig'd I prob had a dif issue with an older laptop, but the searches brot me here, and to you, so...

I ran the command as you instructed, so here's the output...

Also as per your reply discussing LM20 vs LM19 (and I also understood you were discussing a newer system with that one), other than installing AnyDesk, I've done nothing permanent.

Basically I installed LM18, then went thru upgrading it to LM18.3 per the official LM Blog, and then the same with then upgrading to LM19 (I actually continued upgrading JIC the newer OS fixed the issue on it's own, so am currently at LM19.3), so if you need me to start over, or upgrade to LM20+, then I'm good with that :)

I was coming up empty on the message in the journalctl, so I decided to do a search on chip-ID: 8086:0046 and found quite a few on this forum. People with it are running LM20.2 and the graphics drivers are installed. Here is LM20.1 with an HP.

It makes me think this might be something hardware related.

If you are not doing so, boot the laptop with it plugged in and see if that makes a difference. If not, let's take a look at the full boot info:
journalctl -b | nc termbin.com 9999
That command prints the journal log information of the boot cycle and sends it to termbin (which makes it available for approximately one month). It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

Okay... I know it's not acceptable practice to swear in this forum, but 'Holy S#1!', you're def MY kinda guru!! (and I'm DEF embarrassed  LOL)

I can confirm that the laptop has been plugged in from the initial install of LM18 right up to now, as I'm the kinda techie that always feels installing/upgrading using batt pwr isn't the best practice (I don't even update my phone unless it's plugged in), but just for s#i1s-n-giggles, I thot "Well why not try booting this thing up with the pwr unplugged"...

Based on my above, pretty sure you know what happened   .

I plugged it right back in after it was up and it did 'flick' to a black screen, but then the screen brightened a bit (as laptops dim/brighten when you plug/unplug them) and the desktop remained, so I think we've found proof that this issue (at least mine) is due to a laptop monitor pwr cycle setting (???)

So as I'm prob guessing exactly what you'd want to know next  , going further with this, here's what I did next...
  • Reconnected the pwr and rebooted - screen goes black
  • Rebooted again with pwr disconnected - no black screen
  • Plugged pwr back in - screen 'flicked', brightened - desktop remained
...THEN...
  • Rebooted with pwr connected (again, black screen), then
  • ...unplugged the pwr cord (coulda just done this instead of shutting it down to try booting on batt, but - oh well  )
...desktop popped right up (screen dimmed a bit like a nano sec later)

Not sure if this will tell us more now that we've found THIS out, but I ran the cmd as you asked before I tested ANY of the above (I wanted to have an 'as is' result), so here's the URL: https://termbin.com/gbds7

I've been monkeying around with laptops n PC's across Windows and Linux for yrs now, and this is def a 1st for me. Again, not saying it's fixed, but I think we can def say what a really cool 411 to add to this forum (personally I LIKE breaking stuff just like this, so when we fig it out, even if we don't fix it, it ends up on a forum like this for everyone else to benefit from  :D )

Of course I DO understand that this STILL can be a graphics card issue (so could be the way it's tryin to cycle the laptops brighten/dim modes, or some other piece), but... WOW!

P.S. I just ran a few "dif" tests with it plugged in and desktop no working, and here's what happened...
  • Unplugged LAN cable - screen went black (just had to unplug pwr cable and 'pop' - monitor came back on - plugged cable back in, same 'flick'/brighten and desktop stayed up
  • Turned on WI-Fi adapter (had it off as I was using LAN only for all this) - same result as disconnecting LAN cable
  • Waitied for laptop monitor 'sleep' setting to kick in - same 'black...unplug...replug' cycle
..., so def seems like it's a pwr issue with LM either along with the graphics card, or with the monitor cycles (reason I say LM, is I installed Ubuntu on this thing a couple months ago and ran it for a while and it had NO issues)

Oh, and I did change the screen resolutions and Hz cycles to pretty much EVERY setting it had before I submitted my post, as I thot those things might be the reason due to this being an older laptop

Don't mind me. I'm just laying down some moderator fodder.

Let me know if you'd like some spook/FBI/Interpol/spy fodder

Your machine is in the realms of workable and not ancient going by the many calls for help we get with machines that are far, far closer to the turn of last century than they are to the present third decade of the current century. You might try MX Linux or LMDE to see if they fare any better for you.

Thanks for the LX flavor tip Kadaitcha Man (and the fodder  ).

I've used Debian before, and liked it (hard not to like most LX OS's, if not all :D), so if this doesn't pan out, I'll def give MXL a shot. I'd still like to see if I can get the pwr thing sorted with LM, cuz I like the look/fee of it, but of course if it's no doable, then will def try another.

Cheers 8)

Or something has happened since then related to the hardware? Which version of Ubuntu?

In this post I have info on what I found on a Dell laptop with the same cpu/graphics as your computer. Because hardware can vary between manufacturers I did not post it earlier, but ports and connecting to them can be factors in power-related issues. I've also seen where a bad LAN card prevented the graphics from loading properly.

I've been on enough threads where the hardware graphics driver did not load because of power situations with a laptop to know it does happen. It can be related to the operating system (kernel parameters or new kernels have helped for certain ASUS hardware), but usually someone has already found a solution when the computer is older like yours. And usually, it is a pretty consistent issue (everyone with the hardware runs into it). That does not seem to be the case here unless it just affects certain HP models. It's for those reasons I lean towards it being hardware related.

I searched on the first line and found this was a bug that was fixed,Bug 105992 - [i915] Could not determine valid watermarks for inherited state , so I would have guessed it would have been backported to 4.15 by now since that thread is several years old. That should also mean the newer kernel in LM20 should have it.

Based on your investigation, I would think that you could boot a live session of LM20 as long as you keep the AC adapter disconnected from the laptop.

Do you have another AC adapter you can try using?

Very cool findings.

As I mentioned I installed Ubuntu only a cpl mnths back, so it was the latest vers out (so 20.04.2.0 LTS).

I was also wondering if it was my adaptor that may be the issue and not the OS, so I'm gonna see if I can hunt down another one. I'm also gonna try just Wi-Fi (not home at moment - at work  ).

In re: to LM20...

I did state rite from my initial post that I did try a Live vers and had the same issue. In fact it's actually how this all started, as I went down in vers from that point to see if a vers worked, but I do keep seeing that you're finding threads on how things DO work with LM20, so since we're at a stand still (and since I'm getting those notifications that I can upgrade) I think I'm gonna upgrade it to LM20 and all the way to 20.2.

I'll still test the LAN vs Wi-Fi and see if I can locate another adaptor 1st, because if either of those are the culprit, then it's good info for other users

I just looked up the kernel for it and it is listed as 5.8 which is newer than the LTS kernel in LM20 (which is 5.4).

The 5.8 goes end of life in August, but this Mint ISO Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) has the 5.8 kernel if you want to try a live session with it.

Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) has the 5.11 kernel. The 5.11 kernel is the "replacement" for the 5.8 for those needing something newer than the LTS.

As per my initial, I never attempted Cinnamon. Was already worried about graphic issues based on posts between Cin vs Mate, so just went with Mate, but as you've stated a couple times LM20+ seems to work, I'm going to upgrade thru to LM20.2.

BTW - I came home and tested Wi-Fi vs LAN - same result. Don't have another adaptor, but can always go back and start this all over again if/when I get one, just to say we ruled it out

Will report back after I get to LM20.1

Okay - well just to shoot this out now SMG...

I fig'd as I tried the whole LM20, then LM19, then finally LM18 installer, as the 1st 2 had the same issue even with the Live USB (where I had to edit the temp boot grub w that 'i915.modeset' entry), since you kept finding threads about 2.1 and 20.2 working, and Cinnamon, I fig'd I'd try a Live USB of the latest greatest LM-Cin (20.2) and see wut happened, and (drum roll here)...

...the Live USB worked with the adaptor plugged in (I DL'd the 'edge' version as well JIC), sooooo...

I've gone ahead and kicked off the installer for it, so will report back again ASA it's done.

Well...

I think (if you agree) we can call this closed, as not only did the LM Cinnamon 20.2 Live USB work, but it installed with NO screen issues, so as there's already known correlations between kernels and hardware, this one seems to have been specific to the power connection.

I'm still gonna test the Live USB of LM Mate 20.2 (just the USB), so will report on it one last time then close this out, BUT...

Let me know if you want me to put this thing thru some other hoops for forum sake for other users to benefit. I'm game  :D

There are no Edge versions available for MATE or Xfce, so the only way to test a newer kernel in a live session is to use Cinnamon. I was just suggesting it for testing purposes. If the newer kernel works, then one can install MATE and upgrade the kernel (through Recovery Mode, if necessary) using Update Manager.

I use Cinnamon, but with all the effects turned off. Those who have done comparisons in the past indicate Cinnamon without the effects is a similar memory usage to MATE and Xfce. I do not know if that has changed with the latest version of Cinnamon.

Or power draw/management of something in the system. I would not have guessed before this that the newest kernel would be the one with the most success given the age of the computer. I learn something new all the time. :)

Yah - it's not usually 'the newer version will work better for older hardware', it's 'your old hardware is 'old', upgrade it to use the newer version', so gotta say, this is why we all love Linux.

I'd say even tho this wasn't a fix for anyone having actual graphics issues, it's def a good run thru with older hardware for others to take from, so I'm not gonna separate too many hairs on this one  .

Thanks tons for all your help, and if you ever need a guinea pig to help test/solve crap, I have a few boxes in my house that I tinker with  .

Cheers and thanks again

Update for this issue as a possible solution (band aide) for some -
LinuxMint 21 - HP8540W (NVIDIA)
- Upon Login to the machine the screen goes blank (backlight turns off even though the backlight is on at the login window) on HP8540W (NVIDIA) when plugged into power. (you can illuminate the screen with a bright flashlight pressed gently up to the screen just as a test if you are having the same backlight issue(
To workaround:
- Unplug power immediately, this allows screen to be visible with backlight on.
- Click on the "battery" icon in the bottom righthand menu bar
- Click "Properties"
- Under "On AC Power" tab
- Under "Display" section change the "Set display brightness to:" less than 100% (99% or 98% should work)
- Plug the power cable back in to test to make sure the screen does not go out immediately on AC power.

Screen should stay lit.

This indicates a potential power state profile issue not reading the 100% attribute correctly.

hope this helps some.
