[SOLVED] nvidia-driver-470 not working in Asus TUF Dash F15

Post by Julianiperus »

After a successful installation, Mint suggests changing the open-source driver (xserver-xorg-video-nouveau) to nvidia-driver-470. If I follow this suggestion, a black screen is the only result after booting. If I maintain the open-source driver, which according to Mint may heat the CPU too much, I face a small problem which may belong to a different subject: the backlight level cannot be changed in the 'Energy' mini-applet (it allows changing the level of keyboard leds, which is redundant because there are two dedicated keys which work fine). Is there any solution to have both the right graphic card driver and to control the backlight level? Thank you very much.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Your system is too new to be using the 5.4 LTS kernel. For future reference and troubleshooting on your hardware, you will want to make a usb of this ISO Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit).

That ISO comes with the 5.11 kernel which is also available in Update Manager. That will give your system the necessary Intel graphics driver and I expect it will fix the backlight issue.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:9a49
Device-2: NVIDIA vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:2520
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: fbdev unloaded: modesetting,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.0.3 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

There may still be some additional work needed to get the Nvidia driver installed and working, but you definitely need the newer kernel. If that does not fix all your issues, please give the output of inxi -SMCGx in your next reply.

Thank you very, very much! Updating the kernel, as you indicated, solved both the Nvidia driver problem and the backlight control issue! :D :D

That is good news. If your issues are now resolved, please go to your first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.
