low resolution [SOLVED]
Hi all. I've just done a fresh install of Cinnamon 20.2 64bit on a Dell Optiplex 9020 (20 gig of ram) with a HP Compaq LE2202x monitor. The monitor is 1920x1080 native resolution but the highest resolution available in display settings is 1024x768. The same hardware works fine with Windows 10. I've done many installations of LM Cinnamon and this is the first time I've come across this problem and I haven't a clue where to start to fix it. Please help.

My first guess is a driver issue. But without more details, it's simply a guess. SMG, if I recall correctly on here, has helped many with very coherent issues in the past. She's pretty fast and sharp on here, but I don't recall if it's a day shifter or not. She isn't the only one though that can help narrow down the problem.
Regardless, the bigger and more experienced brains here will probably need that inxi -Fxxxrz info.

Re: low resolution
I've mucked around with xrandr and got some more resolutions but after a restart they're gone. I think I can save them in a xorg.conf file but don't know how or where?
Re: low resolution
Usually, those settings are added to the bottom of your ~/home/.profile file.
Selected "Show Hidden Files" in File Manager. Double-click your ~/home/.profile file and it should open in xed (basic text editor on Mint). Add your new resolution lines at the bottom of the file and save the file.

Re: low resolution
Thanks SMG. Adding the xrandr to the .profile file worked okay up to 1560x1050 but not with 1920x1080. With 1920x1080 I get these errors:
screen 0: 1920x1080 508x285 mm 95.94dpi
crtc 0: 1920x1080_60VGA 59.96 +0+0 "VGA-1"

Re: low resolution
With the monitor attached, what is the output of
xrandr --verbose
? Click </>
from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]

because the results will be long.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.

Re: low resolution
New development. I connected the monitor to a different LM computer using HDMI and it worked perfectly right up to 1920x1080. Maybe the VGA cable is faulty??? I'll try a different cable and post the results after breakfast!
Re: low resolution
We've had a lot of people post who end up finding out their issue was cable related, so it's possible.
Usually, theIt's possible the method you were using to add the lines might not have been quite correct because I see a listing for HDMI-2 even though nothing was connected?
It is similar to the listing for VGA-1 which was

Re: low resolution
How embarrassing. A different VGA cable worked perfectly. Sorry for the time waste!
While I'm here though, the Intel Windows driver has a utility for finely adjusting the contrast, brightness and colours. The controls on the monitor are not as effective. Is there anything in the Linux world to do something similar?
